Letter from the Editor:
Investigative Series
In a climate of racial tension,
resistance and organizing- the
editorial staff of The A&T Register
decided to dig up a story that is
often swept away in history.
If you have visited the brick
monuments surrounding the
reflection pool on campus, you
may have noticed bullet holes in a
few of the bricks.
Those wounds tell a story of N.C.
A&Ts 1969 uprising. The uprising
consisted of 3 days of violence and
protest on our campus.
The uprising resulted in the death
of an Aggie, Willie Grimes.

Lets go back to 1969, when
seventeen-year-old Claude
Barnes was denied his victory as
senior class president of Dudley
High School.
He and nine other students
began to protest and demand
the school officials to listen
and negotiate with them for the
betterment of the students and
school.
However, their peaceful protest
turned violent as police began to
get involved with student affairs
and attack the students.
Other classmates witnessed this
and got involved which turned nine
protestors into sixty or seventy-
five protestors later shutting down
the school.
The series of events that
occurred from this would be later
called the Greensboro Rebellion.
It was during this rebellion Willie
Earnest Grimes lost his life as a
bystander.
Grimes was not involved with
the protest.
Around May 19th the students
staged a boycott which caused
the violence to worsen. They used
pepper fog machines, which could
fog up a whole neighborhood,

the story of the longest unsolved
murder in Greensboro.
It is important, as HBCU students,
to familiarize ourselves with an
Aggie History of race relations in
Greensboro.
Each publication will piece
together the events in hopes of
solving the mystery. Find the

situation would be attacked by tear
gas.
Because the gas was so massive
it attacked people who were not
involved with the situation.
Old Ladies who were just sitting
on their porch got attacked by it,
the neighboring middle school,
Lincoln Junior High, was attacked,
the whole community was attacked
by this gas. Thus, parents and
members of the clergy began to
provide support to the students.
Later the high school students
marched to North Carolina
Agricultural and Technical
State University and interrupted
a conference of the Student
Organization of Black Unity, and
gained their support.
Unfortunately, when A&T
got involved, the police started
patrolling the campus, they ran up
and down Market Street with their
shot guns pointed out the window;
threatening people, said Barnes.
Barnes stated that the students
later armed themselves.
Fortunately, many of the
students came back from Vietnam
and had military experience so they
were patrolling the campus and
set up nursing stations. Holland
Hall was used as a main nursing
station so if a student was injured
or shot the nursing students would
provide aid.

rebellion that occurred on the
campus of A&T was like no other
rebellion that took place in America.
Rebellions that happened in
Detroit, Los Angeles, Newark, and
other urban rebellions that took
place youll see fifty black people
or eighty-three black killed. That
didnt happen in Greensboro
despite the excessive use of force.
I think part of it is because
students successfully defended
themselves, said Barnes. During
the rebellion there was only one
documented death, Willie Grimes,
that had occurred.
He also believes the reason
why there was a small number
of casualties was because the
multiclass correlation.
The community of Greensboro
got involved with protecting their
young people.
People from Morning Side
Homes, people from the south
side, and people of Steward Street
armed themselves and protected
the students. There was going to
be an ambush on Steward Street
by the police.
The neighbors in Steward Street
shot at the police first, and I think
five policemen were wounded.
This killed that ambush idea,
said Barnes. Barnes recalls that
the Black community had intense
gunfire, to the point where the
night looked like the day.
Dr. Claude Barnes commented
that he did not know Willie Grimes;
however, had strong opinions
about the case. I think Willie was
trying to get out of the way and was
shot in the back of the head. He
was basically murdered by police.
The Willie Grimes murder case is
the oldest cold case in Greensboro.
According to When the case
was first brought out, there were
students who wanted to testify
that they saw it, and none of the
policemen wanted to listen them.
They discredited their testimony.
However, one student, Calvin
Matthews, did describe what
occurred May 21st 1969. In a
Dailey News article. In the article
Witnesses describe Grimes
death Matthews commented that
he and Grimes were walking with
a group of friends to get food and
that is when he was killed. Grimes
was running behind me and I saw
him fall.
Matthews would later learn
that Grimes was killed after the
gun fires were finished. In the
article Matthews stated that the
person who shot him was in a white
unmarked car.
After Grimes death, Greensboro
was under curfew from 8 p.m. to 5
a.m..

Faith community braces for impact if Trump
slashes social services programs

Mike Murray helped start a
ministry to the homeless and
hungry that now includes as
partners as many as 40 church-
es providing prayer and suste-
nance downtown on weekends.
Hes also a business owner.
When he heard about Presi-
dent Donald Trumps proposed
budget, which cuts billions of
dollars to social service pro-
grams that help many of the
people he serves while de-
creasing the tax burden, he had
mixed emotions.
He understands the plight
of the poor better than most,
because hes out there among
them, offering help.
However, he also believes
that the government took on too
many of the responsibilities that
once rested with communities,
especially people of faith who
are called by their faith to get
involved.
Biblically, the churches are
supposed to take care of the el-
derly and the less fortunate and
weve shunned that idea, and
the government has stepped in
and taken over, said Murray, of
16 Cents Ministry and Church
Under the Bridge. I dont want
to come across as cold and
heartless ... to tell everyone to
find your own way. That would
be stupid on my part.
Trumps blueprint calls for
spending cuts to social service
programs as familiar as mo-
bile meals for the elderly and
disabled to housing subsidies
communities receive to help the
homeless.
Some critics call them unnec-
essarily cruel. In North Carolina,
some point out, they would be in
addition to state cuts in recent
years to unemployment bene-
fits, childcare subsidies, pre-K
for at-risk kids and services in
the schools.
Meanwhile, the state lingers
at the top of lists related to pov-
erty and child hunger.
Observers say its going to fall
on a patchwork of nonprofits
and individuals -- those secular
and those who are not -- to try
picking up the slack.
There is no way nonprofits
can make up the depths of the
cuts hes doing, said Rabbi
Fred Guttman of Temple Eman-
uel. Churches, synagogues,
mosques -- no way.
Guttman, who was leaving a
hospital visit with a member of
his congregation on Friday, said
he has many concerns.
The saddest thing, and Im
preaching about it tonight, is
the cuts in health care are going
to cause people to die, Gutt-
man said.
That is not an irrational
thought, he said. Doctors see it
all the time when people dont
have health care -- and millions
will lose policies with this new
plan, according to the Congres-
sional Budget Office.
It could be the woman who
has a lump in her breast, or
even a suspicion of something
wrong, who, without insurance,

will not go to the doctor until the
last moment, he said.
Now we are going to go back
to the point where theres this
attitude that people can get
health care in the emergency
room, Guttman said.
Aleta Payne, deputy execu-
tive director of the interfaith
N.C. Council of Churches, ticks
off a list of things faith groups
already do in their community
and how they are often over-
whelmed by the need. Many see
people who have never before
had to ask for help.
They are running food pan-
tries, running health clinics;
they are working to serve their
communities at a lot of levels,
Payne said. The scope of what
this budget would do is beyond
what I think a lot of faith com-
munities could sustain.
Most of them are doing tre-
mendous work at the highest
level they can, Payne said of
those groups.
Government exists to keep
us safe and to provide for those
who cannot, on their own, and
so to me, the budgets got to
reflect that, and not just say, If
the faith community did more,
this wouldnt be an issue,
Payne said.
There are little churches in ru-
ral places doing everything they
can but the notion theyre go-
ing to be able to provide every
service for folks in need, I dont
know that was ever the case.
Perhaps in our mythology that
has become the case.
When it comes to his faith, the
Bible speaks of doing for the
least of these.
He points to a small example of
a big impact that churches could
own: If every congregation ad-
opted a homeless person, he
said, how many people would
still be sleeping on the street?
And there must be a conver-
sation about people who re-
ceive these benefits.
Im not talking about the el-
derly. In my mind, they and the
veterans have paid the price,
Murray said.
But he recalls a conversa-
tion hes had, for example, with
someone who gets food stamps.
The man told him that if he got a
job he would lose them.
There has to be a bound-
ary there that says after a cer-
tain time you need to be mak-
ing your own way, Murray said,
that teaching a man to fish,
(instead of simply giving him
one) thing.
Payne is hoping that as the
budget is discussed, elected
leaders remember the weight
that nonprofits and the faith
community already work under.
I would hope that before this
proposal went much further,
there would be some deep re-
flection over what we are fund-
ing and who we are saying no
to, Payne said.
If nothing else, when I look at
decisions that are being made, I
again come back to (the biblical
commandment to) Love one
another, and I just dont see a
lot of love in this budget.

Food deserts are closer
than we thought

College students who are study-
ing at various schools in Greens-
boro would never think to associ-
ate the word desert with this city.
Greensboro is always described
as historic and vibrant by peo-
ple who come to visit. However,
Greensboro can be considered
a food desert in various places
throughout the city.
According to the American Nu-
trition Association, a food desert
is defined as a part of the country
that lacks fresh vegetables, fruits,
and other healthy food choices for
the population in that area to con-
sume.
It is a known fact that there are
few healthy food places in the tri-
ad area. For example, the campus
of North Carolina Agricultural and
Technical State University is sur-
rounded by numerous fast food
restaurants that provide cheap
combo meals for students, but the
meals are not wholesome or nutri-
tious.
For example, Wendys is fa-
mously known for its 4 for $4
menu option where customers can
get a sandwich, fries, nuggets, and
a drink for below five dollars.
The fast food restaurants around
campus are convenient for college
students on a budget who want to
get away from campus food.
These restaurants are what stu-
dents must choose from because
there is no easy access to healthy
food.
This is not only the case for N.C.
A&T students but for other stu-
dents in surrounding colleges such
as Bennett College, University
of North Carolina at Greensboro,
and Guilford Technical Community
College.
Many students are aware that
they are in a food desert, and it is
no secret that finding a healthy
food choice is difficult.
Maiya Smith is a computer en-
gineering student from Lithonia,
Georgia.
She admits she is sometimes
disappointed at how far around the
city she has to travel to find a de-
cent healthy meal.
You have to make it a point to
get healthy food, and you have to
go really far near Wendover [Av-
enue] where it is a nicer area, she
states.
However, Smith is luckier than
most students. She has a car here
in Greensboro that she can utilize
to drive around the city.
Not every student is fortunate
enough to have transportation or
the expense to travel and that traps
students into eating the unhealthy
meals available to them.
I feel forced to eat the same
thing every day, and it is all I can
afford, says Ashlei Randolph,
a senior student from Waldorf,
Maryland.
Food deserts are a community
problem because they reduce the
number of food options for people
in the community. Consuming the
same food is stressful and un-
healthy, and there needs to be a
solution to this problem.
Eating healthily impacts the
quality of peoples lives, and a lack
of healthy food options hinders
people from flourishing through-
out their day.
It is imperative for food deserts
to be eradicated all over the United
States. According to HowStuff-
Works, Poor quality foods are also
linked to chronic illnesses, cancer,
cardiovascular disease, diabetes,
hypertension and even premature
death.
Solutions for food deserts must
be implemented immediately to
solve this community problem.
If there are healthy food choices
near Wendover, they could pos-
sibly expand to other buildings
around the city so that their food is
more accessible to everyone.
Business owners would also
gain more profit for expanding
their services. Overall, everyone
must be aware of the food they
consume and work to expand their
food options.
