Throw Me Something Mister

Lesson Two: Day 2

Daily Topic: Throw Me Something Mister - Mathematics

Objectives:
Students will be able to compute numerical values using multiplication and addition
Students will be able to produce spreadsheets using excel
Students will be able to produce a bar graph of selected data using excel

Procedures:
Day Two:
1.) TTW ask students what throws are included on a float and call on a few students to answer.
2.) TTW utilize a Prezi.
3.) TTW guide lesson using Prezi in following steps:
1. Read numbered phrase
2. State the unit price and number of units
3. TTW ask the students how to get the total unit price
4. TTW let students use calculator to find numerical value
5. TTW tell the students to write their answer on the white board
6. When most children are looking at the teacher, TTW tell the students to show
their answers.
4.) TTW continue through the Prezi, and repeat steps 1-6.
6.) When teacher gets to slide 7 of the prezi, TTW ask the students how one will find the total for
all the throws.
7.) TTW give students time to calculate the answer on the calculator, write their answer on the
white board, and, when all eyes are on the teacher, show their answers.
8.) TTW display the last slide of the Prezi that tells the students what they are doing.
9.) TTW explain in more detail the instructions for the activity by using an example spreadsheet.
10.) TTW point out on the spreadsheet the different columns that need to be present and the
placement of the information.
11.) TTW give the students the link to oriental trading and beads by the dozen.
12.) TTW tell the students that they will be creating a bar graph
13.) TTW point out the information that needs to be charted
14.) TTW demonstrate how to highlight data and program a bar graph on excel.
1. Highlight the data one wants to chart by clicking on the data while holding down
the shift button.
2. Click on chart button above the spreadsheet
3. Click on the bar graph
4. Click on edit data references, unclick the box that says legend, and click on the
box that says title.
5. Click where it says title and enter in a title
6. To label the individual bars, click axis labels, and then choose auto-fill category
labels
7. To label the y axis, click on the axis tab, click on Value(Y), click on Axis Name,
and lastly, click on Value Axis to label it Price of Units.
8. To label the x axis, click on axis tab, click on Value(X), click on Axis Name, and
lastly, click on Value Axis to label it Throws.
15.) TTW tell the students to start and construct the Excel spreadsheet and bar graph while he/
she supervises and offers help to the students if needed.
16.) At the end of the student activity, TTW tell the students to print their work and put away the
computers.
