Motivation Assignment
The first letter in the acronym M.U.S.I.C is M which stands for empowerment. Ms.
Jen does a great job of this. Her students have a great deal of control over their own learning.
When they do work blocks, as they do in the morning and afternoons, she explains the steps and
that is all she does. If a child asks for assistance or is being disruptive, then she may intervene.
Overall, the children work at their own pace. They have the choice of whether or not to get all of
their work done for that work block. The way that Ms. Jen maintains this order is by using a
rewards chart. The children are very serious about this and really wanted to end up on purple,
Super Student, by the end of the day. She simply threatens to move their clips down and the
am observing, it doesnt seem like the children actually understand what they are doing.
Therefore, they dont see the usefulness of the work. I havent seen much improvement since I
started in this classroom. Ms. Jen says that the overall grown of the class is extraordinary, but
since I have not been there all year, I dont quite see it.
The third letter in M.U.S.I.C is S which stands for success. I think the students only
mildly understand what is expected by their teacher. When I have been in Ms. Jens classroom,
they mostly do coloring activities and tracing of letters. They think that their teacher only expects
them to get it done, but really, she doesnt care about that. She just wants it done well. When it
isnt done well, she usually accepts it anyway. I dont think the students put forth their full effort.
They just scurry to get the work done so that they can move on.
The fourth letter in M.U.S.I.C is I which stands for interest. Most of the children do not have
any interest in the work they are presented with. They may enjoy the coloring, but dont gain
anything but fun from it. They want to get it done, but only so that they can move on.

The final letter in M.U.S.I.C is C which stands for caring. I firmly believe that the children
never doubt that their teacher cares for them. They know that she loves them and would do
Reflection:
The artifact provided above was an assignment I completed in EDUC250,
hours required for the course. I was required to be at my school for twenty hours over the course
of the semester. By completing this assignment, I was able to assess my service-learning teacher.
I was able to evaluate her teaching styles and what it takes to be a motivating teacher.
INTASC Standard 3 discusses the need for a good learning environment that supports
both individual and collaborative learning. In the artifact above I evaluated my service-learning
teacher using the acronym M.U.S.I.C. M stands for empowerment. U stands for
usefulness. S stands for success. I stands for interest. C stands for caring. By putting these
met all of these; she exceeded in performance. She is very skilled in making children feel like

they are making a difference. She supports their individual and collaborative learning. This
learning environment for their students. This is what INTASC Standard 3 is all about. I need to,
as a teacher, find ways in order to encourage active learning. Hopefully by observing within the
