perform on a cold read vs. a hot read.
Naturally they perform better after
repeated readings. Also, the way they
tracked the verbal retell was very
similar to how you track retell using
DIBELS ORF.
Vagal brake (RSA has been termed

keeps the nervous system in check), I
pictured a brake pedal in our minds

disabilities are not a prescription for
failure. This made me think of the
parents of children with LD. Many
families must feel this way. Its
difficult.
It was fun to see other types of LDs
such as dyscalculia. Not one we hear
too much about.
Its unreal how ADHD continues to
increase rather than decrease.
It was a good refresher to go over the
different types and the laws that
protect LD.

Interesting how almost half of

identified as SLD.
I wish we had access to more
resources. We need to research
whats available and talk about at the
school level.
Private School Participation Project:
Prior to moving to Hawaii, I didnt
know much about private schools. I
learned that many people here view
private is better than public. My own
neighbor told me she would never put
her children in public schools. She
went on and on about horror stories
she had heard. This was before she
even knew I was a public-school
teacher. Yikes!

Video Clip: Childs Fault

Unfair to assume that the child is at This reminded me of deficit-thinking
fault. Vs. Assets based. Do people feel
better when they can blame someone
for something? In the case of a
struggling learner, its easy to point
fingers and put the blame on them.
Too often do I hear teachers that I
work with talk poorly about the child
and their family. Its uncomfortable to
listen to.
Do families blame the child too? I can
picture families yelling at children that
its their fault they cant _____. If they
hear it from home and school what
does that do to them?

I remember the pressure I would feel
reading aloud in front of my peers. I
still feel like that reading in front of

We are in a learning environment and
should feel safe. That is what I stress
to provide. A safe caring environment
where my students feel safe to take
risks and learn.

Video Clip: The Power of Shame

Left Column Right Column
Shame stays for a lifetime. Im still shaking my head at the
stories about the child that pretended
to be deaf and underwent
unnecessary surgery, and the man
that pretended he didnt have his
reading glasses to read a note from
work, little to take it home for his wife
to read. Why does this happen?
Kids should feel safe when learning.
No one should feel threatened. Other
students should also be encouraging.
We dont do this enough. It needs to
change.
