internet for social media and interaction. Social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram,
and Facebook, have been growing and enhancing exponentially throughout the past few years
and continue to do so as time goes on. As many things in our society begin to transfer to the
internet, so does the populous with their everyday thoughts, actions, opinions, and more recently
their political standpoints. With arguably the most controversial election in decades having just
concluded, we have seen numerous instances of violence in the streets of big cities, female rights
and immigration protests, and countless pictures, videos, tweets, or posts regarding various
individuals views on the outcome of the election (most of which being quite negative). It has
become a growing trend on social media for those to voice their political opinions in a very stern
manner, and also to denounce those who might have a differing opinion from theirs. With this
growing trend, more and more individuals have began to formulate opinions on issues that they
might not have particularly paid attention to before. Due to this trend, the divide between those
in political opposition has been strengthened through the usage of social media. Another trend
that has grown in popularity as seen in the 2016 election, would be the utilization of social media
for campaigning and advertising purposes. This was seen most prevalently in Donald Trump,
whose presidential campaign was based heavily in social media. With Donald Trumps
presidential campaign (along with the campaigns of his various competitors such as Hillary
Clinton, Bernie Sanders, or Ted Cruz), being active on social media platforms, as were those who
were to voice their opinions on the outcome of the election. Much of this was in negative context
towards Donald Trump, who ended up the victor in the election. With an increasing amount of
opinionated individuals and well-known politicians utilizing social media to present their
political standpoints, or with the intent of benefiting their various campaigns, Social media has
begun to play an increasingly prominent role in todays politics and it has begun to negatively
affect the way that certain individuals approach specific politicians, political campaigns, and
political viewpoints.
