Zeoli, Richard. "Seven Principles of Effective Public Speaking." Seven Principles of Effective

Public Speaking. American Management Association , n.d. Web. 27 Mar. 2017.

In his article Seven Principles of Effective Public Speaking Richard Zeoli talks

about the seven most important tips in public speaking he has learned in his career as a

media coach. Zeoli stresses that perception, not focusing on perfection, visualization,

discipline, description, inspiration, and leaving the audience wanting more are skills that

will greatly improve ones public speaking skills. Zeoli also mentions that while formal

training in public speaking does help, these tactics are the most effective in improving

your public speaking skills.

In my essay, I am trying to explore the different tactics used by people to become

better public speakers. This is a very important part of my essay since I myself want to

become a better public speaker and many others do not feel comfortable speaking in front

of others. I am specifically looking for tactics that are not practice makes perfect.

While Zeolis uses this tactic he also points out other important strategies that are just as

important and demonstrates them in this article.

Zeoli is the president of RZC Impact which is an executive communications

training firm of which Zeoli is also the founder. This article was published by the

American Management Association(AMA) which is a non-profit organization that offers

courses in leadership, management, and communication. Zeolis article is meant to be for

everyone no matter their previous knowledge or skill in public speaking. This is a highly

reputable source as the AMA was founded in 1923 and Richard Zeoli is a published

author with his book The 7 Principles of Public Speaking being published in 2008 by

Skyhorse Publishing.

Pomfret, Emma. "Public Speaking Article." Impact Factory. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Apr. 2017.

In her article The Art of Public Speaking Emma Pomfret interviews Robin

Chandler, a partner with a communications and public speaking company. Pomfret talks

with Chandler about the tactics that he promotes at his company and to his customers.

Pomfret also goes over common mistakes and tips to use during public speaking.

In my paper, I am trying to cover tactics that help people to become better public

speakers. This article goes over helpful tips for public speakers but also covers common

mistakes people make during public speaking. I plan on using this article because it gives

a wide variety of helpful tips from body language to attitude.

"Public Speaking: Essential Skills." Successful Meetings, vol. 44, no. 2, 1995, pp. 118, ProQuest

Central,

Public Speaking: Essential Skills begins with how business leaders have

begun to recognize the importance of public speaking. It also covers the several ways to

control and command your audience when giving a speech. Finally, it shows how to

properly engage in a Q and A session and how to avoid floundering during one.

I plan on using this article in my paper to demonstrate how one can

properly control their audience during a speech. Speaker and audience engagement is

very important and this article shows how to make sure the audience connects with your

speech. It also shows the importance of a Q and A sessions and how it can make or break

your speech. This is important because in my paper I am trying to show skills that can

improve ones public speaking skills and how to succeed while giving a speech.

This article was published in Public Speaking: Essential Skills, a book

written and published in November of 2016. It was published by Northstar Travel Group,

a group dedicated to conducting business internationally since 1975.

Johnson, John R., and Nancy Szczupakiewicz. "Shibboleth Authentication Request." Shibboleth

Authentication Request. Taylor & Francis Online, 18 May 2009. Web. 08 Apr. 2017.

This article compares a standard college speaking course with the public speaking

skills of college alumni. It also shows the opinions of students and faculty towards public

speaking skills and how they are taught them. The article then goes over the results of the

survey which show the differences between the public speaking skills that faculty and
students thought were important. It also shows the disparity between the skills that are

taught in college and the ones that college alumni say they use in the work place.

I plan to use this article to show the disconnect between college educators and

students. It shows that the way we are teaching students to improve their public speaking

skills are not applicable to the work place. It also shows how student dont see the

importance of the public speaking skills they are being taught.

This article was written by John R Johnson an associate professor of

communication at the University of Wisconsin and Nancy Szczupakiewicz, a Human

Resource Training Program Designer for Mortgage Guarantee Insurance Corporation.

The article was published by Taylor & Francis Online, an international publishing

company that specializes in academic journals.

"Better Public Speaking: Becoming a Confident, Compelling Speaker." Communication Skills

From MindTools.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 09 Apr. 2017.

This article covers the important aspects of public speaking such as practicing and

listening to your own speech. It also goes over physiological tips like controlling nerves

and body language. It also encourages the reader to speak positively and connect with

their audience. The article also covers the benefits of developing good public speaking

skills.

I plan to use this argument as a counterpoint of my assertion that there are other

ways to become better at public speaking than just practicing. This article presents more

standard techniques to improve in the field of public speaking and will be a great counter
point to my other sources. It also provides more information on the art of public

speaking.
