PSA

The public service announcement that I chose applies to middle aged married

couples who are wanting to start a family other than their own children. The subject that

was chosen is adoption and fostering children. 400,540 children are in the US foster

care system. Most children are placed temporarily in foster care due parental abuse or

neglect. As a percentage, there are more children of color in the foster care system

than in the general U.S. population. However, child abuse and neglect occur at about

the same rate in all racial/ethnic groups. The number of foster youth have tripled in the

last twenty years. This is a major problem that I believe people need to understand and

take into action.

This topic is close to my heart because of the love I share for children. I strongly

believe every child deserves a loving home and a safe place to lay their head at night.

Being around children all day while working a at daycare, I am very understanding that

children need attention and love to feel safe. It is heartbreaking to me that so many

children in this world are abused and neglected. I have several close friends and family

members that are in the process of fostering and adopting and it brings joy to my heart

to know that more children are finding their forever homes.

While creating my public service announcement, I used pathos and logos. Using

pathos, I created a billboard with a picture of a little kid holding a mannequin hand and

in font, it says Everyone deserves a home. In small print under the picture, I included a

statistic about foster care stating 400,540 children are in the US foster care system, but

there could be one less. I also used logos by stating that everyone deserves a home

meaning it is understood that most people live in a home. I am addressing the problem

that there are a tremendous amount of children in foster care waiting to be adopted and

find a forever home. Many Americans are unaware of the number of children without a

home so it is my job to inform them.

After creating my public service announcement, I am hopeful that my call to

action is clear to my audience. It is my goal for families and middle aged couples to see

this billboard understanding the heartbreaking amount of children that dont have a

home. It is important that these families are ready to take action and foster a child to

give them a safe and loving home as they would want for their own children.

While creating my PSA, I was unsure of what image I would use until I came

across an image of a little boy holding a mannequin's hand. Although there were many

other foster care and adoption photos to choose between, this one really spoke to me.

Choosing this image is letting other parents know that every child, no matter how young,

desires and deserves a loving family. The topic I created for my PSA speaks to my

heart because of the love I have for children and I believe every child truly deserves a

loving a caring family to love and to cherish forever.
