their own languages, and share music, food, games, hobbies, or
traditions in the classroom
Encourage families to provide pictures relating to their cultures
to hang in the classroom to provide visual diversity to the
classroom.
Students work will be sent home with parents to allow parents to
learn about the different cultures of their childrens classmates

Pre-Assessment: What data did you use to plan for instruction that
meets childrens interests, needs, and abilities? This may be formal or
informal.
Before planning this lesson, my mentor teacher informed me that
two of the students that will be participating are ELL students
and two are gifted
o This information helped me to plan my lesson and ensure
that my lesson was appropriate for their needs, abilities,
and cultural differences
I used a video of the Disneyland ride Its A Small World to
capture their interest at the beginning of the lesson

Lesson Procedure and Activities: (the format will depend on the

type of lesson such as ELA or science)

Introduction: A brief activity that will introduce the lesson by

activating students prior knowledge and/or experience, interests
them in the lesson, and sets a purpose for the lesson. (About 5
minutes)
Introduce the activity by showing students the video Its A Small
World After All
Ask students what they think they video is about
Discuss with students that the video relates to different cultures
o What differences do you see in the different cultures?
o What similarities do you see?
Discuss with students that people with different cultural
backgrounds share similarities with their own background
o Although people with different cultural backgrounds may
not look or speak the same as you, they may share
similarities with you. For example, people all over the
world have the same basic needs such as food and water.

Activities: This is a detailed, step-by-step list of the activities.

Include questions you may ask the students, if applicable. Be very
specific so anyone can follow the directions to conduct the lesson.
Introduce the lesson by showing the video Its A Small World
Initiate discussion about what the video is about
Discuss similarities and differences of cultures
Use a globe/world map to have students point to the countries
they are from
o Discuss the distance between the two
Ask students to share something about their culture
o What are different holidays you celebrate?
o What different foods do you eat at home?
o What traditions do you practice in your home?
Remind students to treat all cultures with respect
Students will work in pairs (one gifted student, one ELL
student) to conduct an interview on one another about their
respective cultures
o Help students get started by providing examples of
interview options such as: language, holidays, traditions,
food, music, etc.,
Instruct students to write answers from their interviews in their
notebooks
After the students finish their interview, they will construct a
Venn diagram to illustrate how their cultures are similar and
different to the culture they are learning about
Each student will be provided with 2 sheets of white paper
Students will be instructed to stack the paper on top of each
other and fold them in half, creating a booklet
Staple the paper along the folded lines to create a booklet
Students will use the information on their Venn diagram to
write informative sentences comparing and contrasting the
two cultures
o Each page of the booklet should contain one element of
culture
Ex: one page discusses how the two cultures
holidays are similar and different
Students will be allowed to draw pictures that correspond with
the sentences

Closure: Briefly summarizes, reviews, or wraps up the experience.

(About 5 minutes.)
Conclude the lesson by having each student share what they
have learned about their partners culture and
similarities/differences between cultures
Ask students to share what they think is the most interesting
thing they have learned about the others cultural background
Differentiation: How will you organize and manage instruction to
meet the needs of each student? (special needs, behavior needs,
different ability levels, cultural differences)
Gifted students will be allowed to research information about
selected culture via Internet sources or non-fiction sources.
o Teacher will be available to assist with computer if
necessary
ELL students will be allowed to work on their booklet at their own
pace.
o Misspelled words will not be marked as wrong; rather, the
words will be circled and corrected so the students have
knowledge of correct spelling
o They will be grouped with gifted students to ensure
guidance and a better grasp of English throughout the
lesson.
o By allowing these students to work one-on-one with a
partner, they can exercise their verbal skill without the
anxiety and pressure to speak in a whole group setting
This lesson was carefully planned to deter cultural bias; rather,
this lesson was planned with the intention to explore and respect
cultural differences

Formative Assessment/Evaluation: How will you determine if the

objectives were met? This may be formal or informal.
Students Venn diagrams can be used as an assessment during the activity to see if
the students are understanding the concept and objectives
Students will create a booklet that contains informational sentences with
correlating illustrations about similarities and differences between their cultures
