Unit Summary:
MeettheArtMastersisaunitenrichedinarthistoryandstudioart.Studentswillbeintroducedtotheoldmasters,referringtothepaintersofskill
whoworkedinEuropebeforeabout1800,throughhistoricalartlessons.Tomaximizethislecturebasedportionoftheunit,studentswillparticipate
invariousclassbasedactivitiestobeabletounderstand,identifyandanalyzeartworksusingappropriateartvocabularyandvisualandcontextual
evidence.Asforthehandsonportionoftheunit,studentswillbeabletochooseanoldmasterpaintingandmaketheirownpersonalcopyofthe
chosenmasterpainting.Althoughcopyingartworkiscontroversialandmaybeseenas"stealingart",itisnonethelessthemosteffectivewaystolearn
techniquesandbuildskill.Thisportionservesasanexerciseopportunityforstudentswillchallengeandrefinetheirstudioartskillsandmaximize
theirunderstandingoftheirchosenartists,mediaandstyleofwork.Mygoalattheendofthisunitisforeachstudenttohaveanexcellent
understandingofoldmasters,theirartisticcontributions,importanceofartisticanalysis,andultimatelybeonestepcloserindevelopingtheirown
personalartisticstyle,tastes,andpersonalityasartistsinthemaking.Thislessonissuggestedforstudentsthatareinthehighschoollevel.
