Early Reading
Name: Meredith Marsden
Lab Instructor: Ji Lim
Lesson topic:
This lesson will focus on word learning and early reading in a kindergarten
classroom. My course theme has been the alphabet and this lesson will take that
one step further into applying the knowledge of the alphabet to word recognition
and early reading.
Indiana Standard(s):

K.RF.1 Understand and apply knowledge of print concepts, phonics, phonemic awareness,
vocabulary, and fluency and comprehension as a foundation for developing reading skills
K.RF.2.1 Demonstrate understanding that print moves from left to right across the page and from
top to bottom.
K.RF.2.2 Recognize that written words are made up of sequences of letters.
K.RF.2.3 Recognize that words are combined to form sentences
K.RL.2.1 With support, ask and answer questions about main topics and key details in a text
heard or read.

Target audience/students:
The students are young, and for many this is the first time trying to learn how
to read. They might become easily frustrated and discouraged if it does not come
easily for them. On the other hand, if students have a home environment where
they have been introduced to reading books then they might become easily bored. I
need to challenge those who have some reading experience, while nurturing those
who do not. Students may also have difficulty in using the interactive module, which
is why parents are encouraged to be there to help with logistics, but need to allow
students to do the work themselves.
Lesson objectives:

Given an early reading book, students need to be able to read and correctly
choose written answers based on questions given verbally about the basic
content of the book after one individual reading of the book.
Learning environment:

This lesson will take place at the students home. One challenge is that
parents might assist the children too much which would make the at-home
assessment less accurate. Parents will be reminded that accurate results are
important. Students also may not have internet access or computers to use,
in which case the schools computers may be used.
Materials needed for the lesson
Students will need the book that will be provided by the instructor. Access to
a computer or tablet, as well as internet access. If students do not have a computer,
tablet or internet access, the schools computer lab may be used.
Procedures
1. All students will receive the same book from the instructor to take home
as well as a handout for parents detailing the assignment.
a. The handout will include the importance of the parents not assisting
the students during assessment and the link to use to access the
assessment.
2. Parents will assist the students in accessing the presentation via the link
given to them in the handout.
3. The opening of the presentation will be a video of the instructor reading a
different early reading book.
4. A big arrow will appear on the screen, prompting the students to click it
and move on with the assignment.
5. Three buttons will appear on the screen: People, Places, Actions.
a. If they pick the People button, a PowToon will open that explains the
importance of People in stories as characters. It will then explain
who each person in the teacher-read story was and what they add
to the story.
b. After the PowToon, the students will be brought back to the main
menu of buttons.
c. If they select the Places button, a PowToon will appear that explains
the importance of different places, or setting in stories as well as
identifying the setting of the teacher-read story.
d. After the PowToon, the students will be brought back to the main
menu of buttons.
e. When the Actions button is picked, a basic outline of what
happened in the story will be given in a PowToon as well as a basic
definition of the word, Plot.
f. After the PowToon, the students will be brought back to the main
menu of buttons.
6. A big arrow will appear on the screen, prompting the students to click it
and move on with the assignment.
7. A sample assessment based on the book that the instructor read will
appear.
a. The sample will be equipped with a teacher voiceover explaining
the process of taking the assessment.
b. The students will be given four different buttons with a voiceover
telling them to select the button for the question they would like to
answer first.
c. First the students will listen to an audible question
d. Then the student will be given three written possible answer
choices.
e. Once the entire question has been read, the student will have the
opportunity to select an answer.
f. If the answer is correct, the student will hear the instructors voice
saying Good job! Youve picked the right answer!
g. If the answer is incorrect, the student will hear the instructors voice
saying Youre almost there, try again!
h. Once the student gets the question correct, the same page with the
buttons will appear with the voiceover prompting the students
again.
i. The process will continue until all of the questions have been
answered.
8. Another big arrow will appear for the students to move on with the
presentation.
9. A video will appear of the instructor wishing the students good luck and
explaining that once they start the assessment, if they need more help to
click on the star in the top corner and the teachers voice will prompt the
students to remind them of the process.
10.Another big arrow prompts the students to move on.
11.A slide that says Read will appear with a voiceover of the word being
said.
a. The voiceover will also explain that the students cannot click the
big arrow present on this slide until after they read.
12.Students will read the book given to them by the instructor.
13.The students will then click the arrow to start the assessment.
14.Students will be prompted by a voiceover to type in their names before
starting the assessment.
15.Students will take the assessment as detailed in step 7.
a. The assessment will consist of four questions asking about
characters, colors in the book, and basic plot.
16.After the fourth question, a video of the instructor congratulating the
students will appear along with two buttons, one button saying Exit and
the other saying Try again. At the end of the video, the students will be
prompted by the instructor to click a button.
a. If the Try Again button is selected the students will be brought the
beginning of the assessment.
Assessment
Students will take the assessment at the end of the presentation as detailed
in the procedures to test their ability to read basic words and understand the
meaning of basic sentences.
