Explain how the ideology of the French Revolution led France to develop from constitutional monarchy to democratic
despotism to the Napoleonic empire.

Students will be able to chart and analyze the Reign of Terror, the rise of Napoleon, and while the French Revolution
brought individual liberty, reverted back to authoritarianism.

Unit Summary:

In this unit, students will learn about the Reign of Terror. In this unit, students will be able to understand how a revolution can
turn violent and can in turn be a detriment to the people who originally sought to break away from the Old Regime. The
assassination of Louis XVI changed the political landscape in France the event is the watershed moment in which the French
Revolution turned violent. With the rise of Maximilian Robespierre and the committee of Public Safety turned on the French
people and accused many people of committing treason and turning against the ideals of the revolution and sent them to their
deaths to the guillotine. With students understanding how a revolution can turn violent, they can understand how a revolution
can affect the people how were for it. With understanding the rise of Napoleon, students will also have the knowledge on how
revolutions can also turn authoritarian. Students will understand on how leaders seek to take power in a chaotic unstable
situation.
