hours using analog and digital clocks.

Contextual Factors:
Advanced class with 22 students, 10 boys and
12 girls in a public school. 7 students go to a
speech therapist everyday. Some students need
one-on-one assistance when learning new math
concepts. These 5 students will be a part of this
small group lesson.

Teacher Materials/Resources:
analog clock
checklist for students

Student Materials/Resources:
dry erase marker
dry erase board
dry eraser

Technology Integration: No technology needed

Family/Community Connection or Extension:
Parents were sent a weekly newsletter that explains
the lessons for the week. Parents practice and go
over homework with students daily and notify
teacher of any problems or comments. Students will
be told to ask parents about bedtime, snack time,
and other times that they can practice with.

Pre-Assessment: The students have already been

exposed to clocks and schedules in the classroom.
They know that certain daily events happen at
certain times. They know what the clocks look like at
these times but not necessarily the times. Before the
lesson begins, students will be asked if they know
how to tell time and what clocks they see in their
homes.

Lesson Procedure and Activities:

Introduction: The teacher will explain the topic of

the lesson to the students. She will ask the
students if they know the types of clocks and the
difference between them. She will also ask if they
know how to tell time and what clocks they see in
their homes.

Activities:
Teacher will explain the difference between
the hour and minute hand on analog clock
Teacher will demonstrate how to move the
hands on the model analog clock.
Teacher will explain that the hour is
determined by the short hand on the clock.
Teacher will explain that there are 24 hours in
a day and that the hour hand does one full
rotation in the morning (midnight to noon) and
one full rotation in the afternoon (noon to
midnight).
Teacher will explain that the minute is
determined by the long hand on the clock.
Teacher will explain that there are 60 minutes
in an hour. She and the students will count
from 1 to 60 as the teacher moves the minute
hand around the clock.
She will show the students that every number
on the clock also adds 5 minutes past hour.
Teacher will show examples to students to
better explain.
Teacher will explain to the students that a
digital clock shows the time as the hour, colon,
minute
Teacher will say different times and students
will practice writing the times as seen on a
digital clock.
Students will then take turns practicing time
on analog clock.
Teacher will record and make anecdotal notes
as she observes the students practicing
writing digital time and using analog clock.

Closure: The teacher will ask the students if they

have any questions. She will show the students
fifteen minutes past the hour just to show them
that once they understand half hour they can learn
other times as well.
Differentiation: Advanced students in the small
group will practice with times other than hour and
half hour. Students who are struggling will only focus
on times on the hour.

Formative Assessment/Evaluation: After the

lesson has been taught and the students have has
enough practice, the teacher will use a checklist to
determine if students understand how to show time
on both analog and digital clock.
