EED278 Individual Social Studies Activity

30 Points Possible
Name: Alejandra Sanchez
Topic/Title of Activity: Continent Jumping
Target Age Group: 4-5 year olds
Part One: Preparation
Personal purpose for completing SOCIAL STUDIES activity with children (1pt):
The purpose of this activity is so that the children can have a greater understanding of the world and the basic
geography.
Child objective for implementing SOCIAL STUDIES activity (1pt):
The objective for implementing this is to have the children understand that the world is mainly
made up of water and has seven continents.
Anticipated Child Outcome (2pt):
The children will be able to predict and formulate their own ideas about what they think the earth is like. The
children will be able to identify the amount of continents and explain what type of matter the earth is mostly
made up of.
Materials needed and instructions (2pts):
The materials needed for this activity were sticky notes, blue plastic table cloth, sharpies, continent map, and an 8
numbered virtual die. The blue plastic table cloth is essentially my large continent map that the children will be
jumping on. To create the pictures of the continents I traced the images off of google by putting it on the smartboard
and then placing the tablecloth on the smartboard to trace with a sharpie. I numbered the sticky notes and placed
them on my map. When playing the activity, I used an 8 number die to have the children roll and jump on a continent.
DAP instructional strategies and accommodations (2pts):
I introduced this activity by first asking them what they knew about the place we lived. I thought that the
children were going to start off small and we were going to build up from there but the first response I got
was EARTH! and so I asked them what they knew about earth. Then after our discussion on earth and
what are the characteristics of earth we jumped right into the activity. The lesson had DAP strategies like
asking questions. The children had the opportunity to use their higher level thinking skills to think about the
planet we live on. The lesson also gave the children directions on how to do the activity. The children
followed directions that were given to them and didnt struggle to understand them. Some accommodations
for the activity could be
Social Studies State Standards Addressed (identify at least 2 for Social Studies 2pts):
Strand 2: Community Concept 3: Geography
Strand 2: Community Concept 1: Understands Community
Identify one standard in a different learning domain that is addressed by this activity (1pt).
Math was addressed in this lesson with the identification and matching of numbers.

Part Two: Field Test with Children

Describe or provide specific examples of childrens responses/behavior (2pts):
The children were interested in the activity; I saw this through the amount of time they were able to play for
about 15-20 minutes. A child said, I love this activity!!. Also, a group of children continued to play the
game on the carpet while the others were to centers for free choice time. The children took initiative and
played the game from start to finish. They had help when it came to naming the continents but other than
that they performed everything on their own. A boy was assigned by another child to do the dice while
another said Ms. Alejandra sit here and then tell us the names.
Based on your observations, identify modification or variations and why (2pts):
From what I observed, I would have to modify the materials that I used for the activity because the were not
durable. Also, for children who are still working on their numbers having a sticky note or type of paper with
the number on could help the match the numbers more easily. For children with special needs like hyper
activity I would defiantly do it with a smaller group and implement a job for him/her to do like be in charge of
the die so that he wont get bored and lose interest.
Provide the questions/statements you asked to extend higher order thinking (2pts):
What do you think the world is made up of?
How could you get from one continent to the other?
What is land?

List other curriculum areas that may expand or support this activity (2pts):
This activity falls under math because the number component and science because the discovery of earth
and some components.
Assessment of activity (3pt): Connect this to anticipated objectives and outcomes
Personally I think that this activity went well because it was easily done as a large and small group activity.
The children were able to follow with me and thoughtfully answered my questions. I know that the children
grasped the basic concepts like that earth is made of water and land and that we have seven continents.
The children learned that we live on North American and I even had a girl connect the we may live on this
continent but may not be from here. Even though, I think that the lesson went I would most defiantly have to
change some aspects of it like the materials. I also think that I would try and find an alternative for the die
because the children and myself struggled with the die.
Implementation Evidence (2pts) Include a picture(s) of your implemented activity within the written summary.
Part Three: Class Presentation (4pts) with Props (2pts) on Due Date
