3.0 HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT Students analyze the role and development of the visual arts in past and
present cultures throughout the world, noting human diversity as it relates to the visual arts and artists.

Big Ideas:

Importance of Weaving: Traditional weaving define the cultures and behaviors of indigenous people.
Purpose of Weaving: Weaving serves many purposes for artists, including self-expression and self-promotion.
Besides, the process of weaving helps artists to develop their critical thinking, problem solving, and pattern-making
skills.
Communicating Through Art: Understanding the elements and principals of design helps artists communicate a
message more effectively.

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Each student will:
broaden their artistic expressions through learning and developing their weaving skills.
Value the traditions and skills of early weavers (Native American, Navajo Weavers).
Improve their observational weaving skills.

Unit Summary:

Look around yourself and pay attention to things that are made by weaving. For instance, your jacket, your t-shirt, your
pants, your blanket and so on, have all been made or clothe. In the past by weaving. Weaving is a method of fabric
production in which two sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angle to form a fabric, hand weaving was more
in practice than nowadays. The main purpose of weaving was to make clothing, sail for boats, tents, carpets, sheets,
towels, bags to carry things in, and many other things. After industrial revolution, hand weaving has been dramatically
declined and became a mechanized process, however hand weaving is still in practice.
In this unit, you will learn the art of weaving and broaden your artistic expressions through weaving skills. You will learn
different types of weaving then you will incorporate them in creation of your final woven bag.
As you create your woven bag, you will record the process by taking photos and create a comprehensive digital
portfolio.
You will also explore and learn about Navajos weaving, culture, symbols, and their designs.

read/watch a teacher lecture that introduces them to
the art of weaving. Students will study and go
through the Prezi presentation in lesson 1 (the art of
weaving); then under Guided note, they will answer
to the questions, draw, and sketch their final woven
bag (the last slide shows the example of the
completed sketch)

Guided notes will help students record and organize

critical information, allowing them to easily reference
this lectures information throughout the unit.
