needs as people and as backgrounds of your students?
learners This book relates to the interactions and prejudices of all of the fifth graders. Each of
their interests and daily practices/habits can relate to the topic of this lesson.
One student (from Boys and Girls Club [BGC]) likes board games and can be
very impartial to their favorite board game that they wont accept any other
games. (Field notes, day 2)
A couple students from BGC do not like to read and are prejudice to the
variables of reading. (Field notes, day 1&4) They will relate to this lesson by
learning that their perspective on reading might be skewed and close minded.

One student thinks hes the fastest student in his class, which makes him
the best student in the class, and wont accept that anyone can be faster than
him. (Field notes, day 5) His interests will relate to this lesson by learning that
others might be just as important and good at things as he is.
During snack time, the boys taught me that if you crush the chips in a
Doritos bag, you get more chips. I tried to explain the logic to oppose this fact,
but the students would not listen to me because they believed their way was the
only way. With the use of this lesson the boys will relate by learning that they
should be open minded to others words of wisdom and others opinions.
No matter what cultural background the student is, they will connect to and learn from
the theme of the book. Most of the children at the BGC are African American, and the
culture of the US today can sometimes portray the culture of African Americans in a
negative way. Because of this, there is much tension between and many stereotypes
placed on this race of people. I want the students to learn from this lesson that they
should not be closed mind and prejudice to people who make assumptions about them,
just like other should do the same towards my students. Their cultural background does
not define who they are and the choices they make, but is just one part of them that they
have no choice of.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
Again, the theme of this book reflects overcoming prejudice and getting to know people
before you judge them. This lesson will help strengthen the connection between
members of the community.
The BGC is almost fully made up of African American students, with only a handful of
students and staff of different races. Today, many conflicts happen due to prejudice of
race within the African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic cultures. By teaching this
lesson, a reflection of the text, the students will get a different perspective of how to
handle situations that may happen in their homes, neighborhoods, and communities.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
In order to challenge students who are grasping the concepts addressed, I will require
those students to cite their responses to my questions in order to train them for writing
papers in middle school where they must cite their sources.
Questions such as
How would you describe Atteans character?
