any people aspire to
drive more efficient-
ly in an attempt to
conserve fuel, save money and
reduce the carbon footprints
of their vehicles. But driving
efficiently can also make driv-
ing safer for motorists, their
passengers and everyone else,
including pedestrians, sharing
the roads. Drivers who want to
drive more efficiently can im-
plement a variety of strategies
to do just that.

Reduce Speed
Obey the speed limits.
Speed limits are determined
with safety in mind, and
drivers should always adhere
to the posted speed limits to
protect themselves, their pas-
sengers and others on the
road. The U.S. Department
of Transportation notes that,
in 2015, 27 percent of motor
Auto Show vehicle crash deaths were
speeding-related. But accord-
ing to the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, obeying
the speed limit is also cost-
effective. The EPA notes that
miles per gallon begins to dip
dramatically when vehicles
travel above 55 miles per
hour. While each vehicle is
different, the EPA notes that
increasing highway cruising
speed from 55 to 75 miles per
hour can raise fuel consump-
tion by as much as 20 percent.

otorheads, families looking for
a new vehicle and folks just in-
terested in the latest trend, will
find what they are looking for at the Auto
Show. The 2017 MotorTrend Auto Show,
today April 22 to April 23, has everything
car enthusiasts desire, and even a little
bit more.
Ford GT
The super-charged Ford GT, which
hasnt been to very many auto shows, will
be at the Albuquerque show, said Charles
Henson, president of the New Mexico Au-
tomotive Dealers Association. It is cost-
ing thousands of dollars just to bring that
car to the show, he said of the street-legal
race machine that dominated the endur-
ance racing circuit in the late 1960s. To
begin with, the car has a $200,000 price
tag. To transport vehicle, it has its own
semi-driver, handler and display materi-
als--thats for one car. The handler comes
out to the show earlier, makes sure every-
thing is set up right, then drives it up onto
the rotating platform. Created years ago
to compete with Ferrari at the 24 Hours
of Le Mans race, the newest version has
a number of changes in its design that
should kindle memories of its racing glory
days. This year they have made dramatic
changes to the Ford GT, Henson said.

Thats not all for the 14th annual show
at the Albuquerque Convention Center in

and potholes can take a toll on
tires over the course of a typical
winter. Drivers will not get far
this spring without tires in good
repair, which is why tire mainte-
nance should be part of any sea-
sonal repair checklist.
Inflation levels
Now is the time to use a tire
pressure gauge to see if tires are
at the ideal inflation levels. Many
tires indicate the recommended
PSI (pounds per square inch) on
their sidewalls. Cold tempera-
tures may cause tires to deflate a
little. Esurance states that winter
weather can cause tire pressure re-
duction at about one PSI for every
10 degrees the temperature drops.
Driving on improperly inflated
tires can be dangerous, potentially
affecting handling and braking
distances. Check tires when they
are cold for the most accurate
reading. Properly inflated tires
also will improve fuel economy,
so drivers may even save a little
money by inflating their tires.
Tire rotation/realignment
Examine the tires for tread
wear. Any uneven or abnor-
mal tread wear could indicate
that the tires need to be rotated
and the wheels realigned at the
very least. Take the vehicle to a
qualified mechanic to get their
opinion on how to remedy the
situation. Mechanics may rec-
ommend rotating tires every
6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about
every six months for the aver-
age driver. Wheel realignment
may be necessary after a season
of driving over potholes and
other irregularities in the road.
Misaligned wheels can cause
handling problems, like the car
pulling to one side.
Tire replacement and cleaning
Drivers may discover ex-
treme tread wear, bulges or
even cracks in the sidewall
during a tire inspection. These
signs indicate that its time to
replace the tires. Failing to re-
place old, worn down tires can
increase the risk of automobile
accidents. Once tires are in-
spected and possibly serviced
or replaced, treat the car or
truck to a washing and thor-
ough detailing. This will help
tires shine and get the vehicle
road-ready for spring trips.

T
he rv lifestyle is a
perfect fit for usev-
erything about it spells
freedom. When youre in your
RV full-time you are able to live
outside the norm, which defines
most peoples life. For instance,
you dont want a bigger house
or more stuff; you want new ex-
periences that focus on the pres-
ent moment and enjoying where
you are.
We are both artists and have
been creating our own definition
of the good life throughout our
40 years together. Our work life
was on the road as we traveled
to art shows all across the coun-
try in an RV. We worked side-by-
side, 24/7 and now that we are
full-time RVers we found that
our relationship work we did
during life helped us adjust to
living in a 300 square foot home.
The work weve done achiev-
ing harmony in our relationship
feeds our RV life in a way noth-
ing else can.
No one talks about what its
going to be like living in a very
small space together, as well as
the importance of teamwork.
While one person drives, the oth-
er navigates and when one per-
son gets the inside ready to move,
The RV lifestyle is a perfect
fit for useverything about it
spells freedom. When youre
the other prepares outside of the
rig. Needless to say, over all the
years weve been butting heads
and becoming clear on how to
be together, which has become
our expertise. RV couples face all
the daily challenges that comes
with this lifestyle with much
more equanimity. So many amaz-
ing experiences that are right out-
side your door are appreciated so
much when you do them with a
companion you enjoy.
One of the places we have
our best conversations about
getting along is when we are
looking out at the road. Remem-
ber the 1959 movie with Doris
Day and Rock Hudson called
Pillow Talk? So we call our
conversations Road Talk in
comparison with that movie.
Our most recent travel ex-
perience was Puerto Penasco,
Mexico. This summer we hope
to complete a dream to go all
the way across Canada. We ex-
perienced western Canada two
years ago and hope to complete
our tour to the eastern coast this
summer. We cant wait for all of
the new experiences to come.
Living life on your own
terms is never easy, but it is a lot
easier as an RVer!

In August 1991, my husband
borrowed his parents beautiful RV
and we loaded our 12 and 13-year-
old boys and our 18-year-old
daughter and made our way to San
Diego. What a good time we had
well, that was until we were on our
way home.
Our daughter wanted to drive
us from Gallup to Albuquerque,
which was fine since my husband
was tired. We enjoyed a lunch in
Gallup and my daughter took the
wheel and was driving us home.
I was sitting in the front passenger
seat enjoying the beautiful New Mex-
ico scenery when I had noticed a car
on the side of the interstate. I told my
daughter to be careful, as the driver
might pull out in front of her. Sure
enough, they pulled up on the inter-
state, forcing my daughter to slam on
her brakes to prevent a car accident
she did everything just right.
Unfortunately, her father was
in the RVs restroom and came fly-
ing out completely horrified and
the United States and explore this
beautiful country. While we have
visited family/friends in Albuquer-
que many times before, this year we
made the first visit towing our RV.
We investigated the campgrounds
around the area and settled on the
Enchanted Trails RV Park--this
campground did not disappoint.
We enjoyed the retro setting, the
Route 66 memorabilia, and also the
retro cars and trailers on display. The
staff could not have been friendlier,
taking the time to answer our ques-
tions. In fact, we plan to stay there
next year when we come down for
the annual Albuquerque Balloon Fi-
esta. Unfortunately during our stay
we had a minor issue on the RV, but
thankfully the La Mesa RV Service
Center had the part we needed and
were very friendly and accommo-
dating. While in Albuquerque we
also had the chance to visit the zoo
and the Botanical Gardens, which
we enjoyed very much.

It was 2007 when my husband,
working while on the road. We
decided that we were not going to
wait until retirement to fulfill our
dream, as Hector said, tomorrow
is promised to no one. So we be-
gan hatching a plan to take a few
years off of work, but realized that
it would take us several years to
be financially prepared for that.
We decided to sell our vacation
condo, downsized our home and
began to save money for what we
named our walkabout. We read
books and blogs written by other
fulltimers and began develop-
ing a budget for our trip. We went
to various RV shows and deal-
ers and decided to upgrade our
travel trailer to a 39 motorhome,
we named her Island Girl. Af-
ter years of planning and saving,
Hector retired from his corporate
job and became a full-time pho-
tographer. We rented our home,
got rid of a lot of our stuff, put
the rest in storage and moved
into our motorhome.
We traveled around the United
States and Canada for three and a

band and I retired, we purchased an
RV with the intent to travel around

of driving through North Amer-
ica. The following year during a
cruise to Alaska we met a couple
who were fulltimers, which is
a term used for people who live
and travel in their RVs fulltime.
We had also discovered that there
are many fulltimers traveling
around the country; some were re-
tired, semi-retired and some still
was to find our next home. We had
fallen in love with New Mexico
years earlier and it was high on
our last. When our walkabout
came to an end we found our lovely
home in Corrales, where we now
live. It is wonderful to have a home
that wasnt on wheels, but there are
still lots of beautiful places that we
still want to see. There will be many
more road trips in our future.

My favorite memory of Route 66
was with my sister Amanda. It was her
freshman year, and my senior year at Al-
buquerque High School. My Dad and I
had just gotten my 1972 Nova running
and on the road. My sister and I, thinking
we were cool, thought we would cruise
down to Pop n Taco on Central and Edith.
We decided to go through the drive thru,
and because of the loud Cherry Bomb
exhaust, I had to shut off the car to place
our order. Well, unfortunately the car
wouldnt start again and we had to push
it through the drive thru! We were pretty
embarrassed at the time, but thankful we
can look back and laugh at the good mem-
ories. I still own my 72 Nova but these
days I enjoy cruising the musical highway
on Route 66 in my 1967 GTO.

Choosing a classic car to remodel has
been a dream of mine for over 15 years. I
chose the Corvette because I was always
a fan of that styling, as well as the iconic
nature of this automobile. My direction
in this restoration is to bring it back to its
original condition, enjoy the curves and
definitely the sounds. Working on this

been so much fun learning and appre-
ciating the engineering behind this car.
Settling into the drivers seat, you can
feel the car welcomingly wrap around
you. The 350 V-8 still naturally sounds
like an unhinged beast; growling at the
turn of the key even after all these years.
It is pulse-pounding excitement when
you step on the gas pedal and hear her
roar! No silly modern day mufflers
here, like other modern cars on the road,
made to only sound tough the power color. In 1982, my mother purchased the

ered 3-inches in the back and 2-inches in the

4 1964 Chevrolet Impala
This car has been in my family since
1972. My grandfather, Gregorio Briceno,
had originally purchased the car from
a family in Barstow California. The car
was just the shell with no engine, trans-
mission, interior or any life. My grandfa-
ther restored the car back to its original
state and down to its original maroon
car from my grandfather and drove it
from his home in California to her new
home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The car was used as our family au-
tomobile, until my brothers went to
High school around the late 80s to early
90s, which is when they started driv-
ing the vehicle to get to school. During
this time my older brother wrecked the
car into our house, blew the engine and
bent the frame. This resulted in so much
damage, not only to the house but the
car as well. Due to this, the car sat idle
until 1995, when I convinced my mom
to give me the car in return I would
work it off. I spent all summer work-

a new engine and start the restoration
of the car. I had the car running before I
got my drivers license. The car was my
mode of transportation to school and
work. I can recall so many memories
from this vehicle. I took my girlfriend,
now my wife, to our school dance in
the car; I would cruise with my friends
on the weekends on Central Boulevard;
my daughter was born in 1997 and she
came home from the hospital riding in
the back seat of this car.
With life getting in the way, the res-
toration stopped for years. The car sat
idle once again, until I finally was able
to breathe life back into it and began re-
storing it all over again.
