Overview
In earlier versions of TopSURV, road stake-out could only be completed within TopSURV if road design data
was imported in one of only a few formats. This is because a format that could transfer all the required
horizontal and vertical geometry, plus design surface templates was needed; formats commonly used are
Land XML and Topcon RD3 files.

String sets is a new feature that allows the user to define a road design using any 3D lines that appear in the
TopSURV map screen. The following steps explain how to use the string sets feature to define a road from
Auto Cad DWG lines.

This tutorial assumes good understanding of TopSURV fundamentals, in the following examples the Auto
Cad DWG file as already been imported

Step 1.
Once you have imported your design lines, inspect the map view; to simplify following steps you should use
layer control to hide data that is not needed for the road definition.

Step 2.
Once the string set is created, it will need to be attached to a road centre-line alignment as its surface.
Alignments can be imported in one of the above mentioned, more complex data formats but for this example
we will create a new alignment using one of the Auto Cad lines we imported.

Select an appropriate line from the map and then right click (press and hold) to open the context menu.
Select the Create a Road option to open the Add Road menu, enter a meaningful name for your new road
and enter an appropriate chainage interval for stake-out i.e. 10m. Press OK.

Step 3.
We are now ready to create a string set and apply it to our new alignment. From the main menu, use the
Edit Roads and String Sets options. Select Add from the String Set menu to create a new set, enter a
meaningful name for your string set and then use the Add option to begin adding strings.

Step 4.
Strings can be added either by selecting the string name from a menu or from picking them from the map.
The map method will be more common when working with Auto Cad files.

Enter a meaningful name for the string you are about to select and then press the Add button. Press the
From Map button and click the first string from the map. Continue this step until all strings required for road
definition are selected.

Step 5.
Once all strings have been added and named, they will appear in the Add String Set list, seen below.
Clicking on each string will display a preview of that string, press OK if you are satisfied with the list.
Highlighting your new string set on the String Set menu will display a preview of all of your strings, design
levels will be interpolated between these strings.

Step 6.
You are now ready to apply this string set as a surface to an alignment. Use the Edit Roads and then
Roads menus to edit your new road. Under the Surface tab, toggle the X-sect/String Set button to read
String Set and then select your new string set from the pull down list.

The working corridor option allows the user to specify a working limit to the left and right of the alignment,
this is to protect against confusion in chainage and offset with alignments that turn back on themselves.

Step 7.
Road definition via string sets is now complete and can be staked out through the stake road and real-time
road options. You will be able to stake out offsets, surfaces and levels to all of the strings in the string set,
see below.
