Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this LAFS.3.RI.1.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how
lesson? they support the main idea.

RL.3.7 Explain how specific aspects of a texts illustrations contribute to what is conveyed
by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting)

Essential Understanding How do the characters actions contribute to the events, plot, and theme in a text? How
is theme revealed through details and language in a text?

Objectives- What are you

teaching? Students will be able to independently determine the main idea of a text and be able to
support the main idea with key details from the text.

Students will be able to use the authors text and illustrations to determine the mood of
the story with their group.

Rationale
I am teaching this objective so students can understand the message that an author is
trying to portray. Students need to be able to support their main idea so they can see
that there should be a reason for their answer. They cant just make up an answer but it
needs to come from a source outside of themselves.

This lesson fits within a larger unit. They have already been working with these standards
and the majority should have a deeper understanding of the questions I will be asking
them.

I teach it in this way because it gets the students thinking and talking with each other.
Sometimes another peer explaining something to another student will make more sense
to them than me trying to explain it.
