SPECIAL DRILL COLLAR FEATURES (cont'd)

STRESS RELIEF FEATURES SMOOTH SURFACE FREE OF TOOL
Stress relief features are recommended for drill collars HARKS INCREASES FLEXIBILITY;
PERMITS BENDING WITHOUT CRACKING
as well as all downhole drilling tools where cyclic fatigue
occurs from bending. The API relief groove pin and the
Drilco Bore Back box remove unengaged threads in
highly stressed areas of the drill collar connection. This
provides a connection less likely to crack in fatigue
because bending in the connection occurs in areas
of smooth relief surfaces free of stress concentrations.
LAST SCRATCH OF BOX LARGE RADII REDUCE
THREAD COVERED BY PIN STRESS CONCENTRATIONS

COLD-ROLLED THREAD ROOTS

Drill collar connection life can be improved by
pre-stressing the thread roots of drill collar
connections by cold working. LOAD
ROLLER
In this process, a hydraulic ram forces the roller into
the thread root, and the roller is then moved down the AFTER ROLLING, THESE
FIBERS REMAIN IN
thread spiral. The roller is of the same contour as the COMPRESSION
thread root, and pressure between the two causes a
cold working of the metal in the thread root.

Cold-worked metal surfaces have greater resistance

to fatigue failure, because after thread rolling is com-
pleted, the fibers in the thread roots remain in com-
pression. As a result, cold-rolled thread roots can
withstand bending stresses longer without cracking
in fatigue.
Note: For comments related to the effect of cold- rolling and gage standoff, refer to
API Spec 7.

DRILL COLLAR HARDBANDING

An automatic, metal-arc, inert gas shielded, consum-
able electrode process is used with closely controlled
preheat and postheat. All Drilco hardbanding is
applied under closely controlled conditions at Drilco
shops, where product inspection is designed into
every manufacturing step.

Hardbanding material consists of granular tungsten

carbide that is fed automatically into the molten weld
puddle to obtain uniform distribution of the tungsten
carbide particles.

The resulting deposit of hardbanding is flush to 1/32"

above the OD of the collar. Hardbanding on the box
end (unless for the special purpose of protecting slip
and elevator recesses) is not recommended because
the hardbanding covers the normal slip area.
Note: The 4%" OD is the smallest diameter that can be hardbanded due to thin
walls in smaller sizes.

MUD-CHEK KELLY VALVE

Model "B"
The Mud-Chek kelly valve automatically holds the mud in
the kelly, avoiding mud spills when a connection is made.
This saves the mud by keeping it in the circulation
system.
The Mud-Chek kelly valve is opened by the force
developed by a pressure difference between the internal
mud pressure and the atmospheric pressure confined in KNOCK-OUT CAP
the spring chamber. The kelly valve immediately closes
by a powerful coil spring when the mud pumps are shut
off; it is either fully open or fully closed in operation. This
is important because it ensures that the kelly valve will
not throttle and will have virtually no pressure loss across
the tool.

FEATURES INTERNAL ASSEMBLY

The Mud-Chek kelly valve is completely automatic. It
will open automatically when the mud pumps are turned
on, and close automatically when the mud pumps are
turned off.
The driller need not change his normal bleed-off oper-
ation if back pressure occurs in the drill stem. The kelly
valve automatically allows reverse flow so that the driller
can bleed off the drill stem pressure when needed.
The kelly valve should be removed when the drill stem is
stuck. When this is not possible, as when the drill stem is
stuck with the kelly down, wire line tools can be run
through the kelly valve after the knock-out cap has been
broken. This is done by dropping a sinker bar onto the
cap, causing it to break out cleanly. See the table for the
BODY
diameter (C) of the resulting opening.
The Mud-Chek kelly valve has no limitations due to mud
type or mud weight. It comes complete with a wear sub
which eliminates the need for an additional kelly saver
sub, and it is designed to be stronger than the heaviest
Grade S-135 drill pipe of the applicable size.
All kelly valves are hydrostatically pressure tested to WEAR SUB
ensure proper operation before leaving the manufac-
turing plant.

RWP STABILIZER
Drilco's RWP (replaceable wear pad) stabilizers make
it possible to maintain full gage stabilization without a
machine shop and are ideal for packed hole stabiliza- SNAP RING
tion. The wear pads can be changed at the rig with
hand tools; no machining or welding is required.
Moreover, only worn pads need changing; you can
continue to run the good pads.
COUNTERBORE FOR BACKUP SLOT
On the surface of the pad, "pressed-in" large-diameter
BOLT HEAD
tungsten carbide compacts prolong wear and keep the
stabilizer in gage.
WEAR INDICATOR

One body can be used for a given range of hole sizes DOWEL PIN
by using different size wear pads. (Exception BVe"
and 61/4" hole sizes.)

Fluted body provides adequate circulation passage.

ELONGATED
How Wear Pads Are Held Onto Body: Each wear SLOT

pad is attached to the body by three cap screws and

nut-type locking devices.

The nut is placed in the elongated slot in the body, REPRESENTS BODY
then turned 90. In this position it cannot be lifted up,
because the shoulder of the nut is under a recess cut
into the body. As a secondary lock of the wear pad to
the body, a dowel pin is installed in the V-groove with
each pad.
LONG-LIFE
PRESSED-IN
The wear pad is lowered into the V-groove and the CARBIDE COMPACTS
backup slot straddles the nut. When the cap screw is
screwed in, the backup slot prevents the nut from
turning. TIGHT

The socket-head cap screw goes through a hole in the

wear pad and is tightened up to the proper torque.
This pulls the nut tight up against the recess shoulder
and the pad tight against the V-groove. (See cross
section.) As an additional safety measure, a snap ring
is installed in a groove in the counterbore of each bolt
hole in the pad above the cap screws. STRING BOTTOM HOLE

New Wear Pad Installation Procedure: The proce-

dure for changing wear pads is simple. First cover all
openings in the rotary table if the wear pads are to be
changed with the tool still in string. Remove the snap
rings, then break out and remove the cap screws from
the wear pads. The wear pads can then be removed
by tapping with a hammer.

Thoroughly clean the pad slot, removing all foreign mate-

rial, raised metal or burrs.

Reassembly is accomplished by installing the nuts into

the body and rotating them 90. Place dowel pins in the
dowel pin hole in the body. Place wear pads into V-
grooves. Lubricate cap screw threads and shoulder with
drill collar lubricant and hand tighten into nut. Ensure pad
is properly secured in the V-groove and tighten the cap
screws to the specified torque shown in the torque table.
Install the snap ring in the snap ring groove above each
cap screw. Be sure the snap ring seats properly in the
groove.

WELDED BLADE STABILIZER

Drilco's Welded Blade Stabilizer is a reliable and eco-
nomical tool designed for use primarily in soft to medium
formations. The stabilizer's open spiral blade design
assures effective centralization and helps prevent
"balling up" of the stabilizer.

FEATURES
Body: Made of AISI 4145 alloy steel.
Blades: Made of mild steel and welded to body with
closely controlled preheating of welded areas and stress
relief of completed welds. All blades are hardfaced with
type "W" granular tungsten carbide hardfacing. Hole sizes
through 171/2" are 3 rib, right hand spiraled design. Hole
sizes larger than 171/2" are four rib straight blade design.
Spare blade sets are available upon request.

PROCEDURES
Maintenance: If machine shop facilities are available,
blades can be replaced by removing them from the body
with a cutting torch. Grind welded areas smooth, preheat
body to 80CTF; and weld on new blades. Postheat body
after welding to 1100F for one hour.

Washover of Stabilizer: In case the drill collar string is

stuck in the hole, the mild steel ribs can be cut off with
a milling shoe dressed with tungsten carbide.

are carburized and hardened with a deep case,
hardfaced, and ground to gage. The Knobby
cutter utilizes tungsten carbide compacts having
a high compressive strength to crush the harder
formations. The bore of all cutters is carburized,
hardened and honed to size to give long life to the
bearing surface.
2. Reamer Pin The large diameter pin, which is
carburized and hardened, ensures good bearing
wear characteristics. The reamer pin is prevented
from rotating by the engagement of the end of the
pin with a slot in the body bearing block. It is rec-
ommended that the pin be rotated 180 in the
block when wear appears between the cutter and
the pin. This usually returns the cutter to gage for
additional reaming.
3. Cross Pin A spring pin is driven into the upper
bearing block to safely retain the main reamer pin - 1 J
and reamer cutter. This drive-fit cross pin arrange-
ment provides a simple, yet safe locking device.
4. Drive-Fit Body Bearing Blocks These blocks
properly position the cutter in the body to cut a 1 1
full gage hole. The blocks are readily changeable
by the drilling crew.
5. Socket-Head Cap Screws and Lock Washers
These are included as a secondary locking
device for the reamer pins on each body for hole
sizes 6 inches and larger.

CAUTION: All surfaces of block are carburized.

Beware of fragments of this brittle carburized surface
breaking off under impact of sledge hammer. WEAR
SAFETY GLASSES AT ALL TIMES.

DRILCO BORROX 85 SEALED BEARING REAMER

reamer on the market.
The bearings in Drilco's Borrox 85 Reamer are sealed
and lubricated for the life of the cutting structure. This 3 PT. REAMER 6 PT. REAMER
provides a proven bearing structure that complements
modern rock bit technology and prevents the reamer
from becoming undergage due to bearing wear.
The cutting structure on the KS cutter incorporates
the latest technology in sintered tungsten carbide for
maximum resistance to abrasive wear and compact
breakage. The compacts are arranged in a special pat-
tern to minimize tracking in the formation. The specially
designed "overgage" rows of compacts at the top end of
the cutter allow the reamer to ream up to Va" overgage
when new, while still being able to pass through a nom-
inal hole size + Va2 ring gage. This greatly extends the
cutting structure life, while still insuring the reamer will
pass through heavy wall casing.
By using round bearing blocks, the body weakening pin
slots and cross pin slots are eliminated. The result is a
stronger body.
The ID of the reamer is matched to the most popular
collar ID's to allow all tools that run through the rest
of the drill string to pass through the reamer.

FIELD MAINTENANCE
The Borrox 85 is a much easier reamer to redress when
the cutters finally do need replacing. The upper block,
bearing pin and cutter come as a pre-assembled unit,
lubricated for the life of the cutting structure at the factory.
At the rig, it is a simple task to replace the cutter
assembly. The steps to redress a reamer are:
1. Remove the secondary locking capscrews from the
reamer blocks. (NoteThe capscrews are a secon-
dary locking device on the Borrox 85 Reamer. The
heavy interference fit between the blocks and the
block pockets is the primary means of retention.)
2. Place the Drilco-supplied knockout tools in the slot
provided under each block.
3. Using a sledge hammer, drive the tools under the
blocks. This will lift the entire assembly out of the
pocket as one unit. Blows should be alternated
between the upper and lower tool to insure the
blocks come out evenly.
4. Thoroughly clean the block pockets, and lubricate
them with drill collar thread compound.
5. Install the lower block onto the cutter assembly and
place the shim (if required*) in the bottom of the upper
block pocket.
6. Place the cutter assembly in the pocket and tap the
blocks lightly to align them. Then drive the blocks in
with heavy blows. Again, blows should be alternated
between upper and lower blocks to insure they go
in evenly.

SEE-FLO DEGASSER
Drilco's See-Flo atmospheric degasser consists
basically of a submerged, centrifugal pump and an
elevated spray tank. The pump contains special
spiraled inlets and an inlet impeller that prevents
gas-locking.

The discharge from the pump housing flows up into a

riser pipe, sprays past an adjustable valve disc and
out into the spray tank. The mud flows out of the cen-
tral valve at a highly increased velocity and impacts
against the wall of the tank. Impact and turbulence at
the wall bring the small gas bubbles to the mud sur-
face where they can separate from the mud.

The mud flows to the base of the spray tank and then
out under normal gravity through a trough to the mud
pits.
MUD FLOW THROUGH PUMP

Typical Installations: The best arrangement for the

degasser is in the first pit pumping to the second pit. It
should be positioned so that the starting switch can
be reached easily. The return line from the second pit
to the first pit should be opened to allow recirculation
and optimum pump submergence for increased pump
rate.

can handle over 175 C.FM., far more than total gas
available from the mud, and discharge it up to 400

DRILCO KICKOFF DRILLING CHOKE SYSTEM

Drilling Choke Consoles: Drilco's control console is an \
integral part of the KICKOFF drilling choke system. It
helps monitor crucial well functions such as casing
and drill pipe pressure, pump strokes and rates, the
console air and hydraulic supplies, and the position of the
discs. In addition, you can have more than one drilling
choke, each able to work independently, yet both can be
operated from the same console.
Built for rugged oil field use, Drilco's console is skid-
mounted for easy installation at any location on or near the
rig. It can be operated hydraulically or manually. For
extreme situations, the maximum choke speed valve
makes it possible to open or close the choke at speeds
never before possible.
Features
Special Design: To make operation more convenient,
we have designed our console so the controls are within
easy reach. And we've enclosed the console to give
working components extra protection from the rig
environment.
8" Gauges: Large, easily-read gauges indicate drill pipe
and choke manifold pressures.
Nameplates: All controls are clearly marked with
nameplates to aid in easy identification.
Choke Positions: The choke can be fully closed, 1/4,1/2,
% or fully opened, or any point in between.

DRILCOLOG PORTABLE PIPE INSPECTION UNIT

Drilco's Drilcolog Portable Pipe Inspection Unit is
designed to inspect used tubing and drill pipe for service-
induced flaws. The system uses electro-magnetic
inspection principles to detect problems such as fatigue
cracks, formation cuts, gouges, slip cuts and dents.
The Drilcolog System includes a patented feature called
"Flaw Alarm." An array of preset lights inform the oper-
ator when a flaw is detected. A strip chart recorder pre-
pares a permanent record of each length of pipe
inspected.
The Drilcolog System utilizes variable DC power for full
penetration magnetization. Electronic sensors monitor
flux leakage from discontinuities.

FIELD INSPECTION SERVICES

Drilco was formed in 1949 as a field inspection and
service company. Over the years, we have grown
into an international organization with a worldwide
reputation for integrity FIELD INSPECTION IS A
MATTER OF INTEGRITY.
The Drilco philosophy of inspection encompasses not
only the usual reporting upon the "as is" condition of
the material inspected but includes, where feasible,
field defect correction and prevention.
Drilco personnel undergo a rigorous training program
in all phases of field inspection before they become
certified. The training program meets or exceeds the
requirements of API RP5A5 and ASNT-SNT-TC-1A.
Drilco technicians inspect connections for fatigue
cracks with the wet fluorescent magnetic particle
inspection method. To find cracks in thread roots, an DRILCOLOG PIPE INSPECTION UNIT

technicians can repair minor connection damage in the
field by grinding the shoulder with emery paper, leaving
a surface that is flat and one that will seal. Many con-
nection shoulders can be repaired at the rig when such
damage would normally require machine shop
attention.

FLUORESCENT MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION

Another inspection method is Drilcolog pipe inspection

unit, an electronic system for inspecting used pipe and
tubing. Drilcolog's most important feature is the patented
"Flaw Alarm," which uses lights for extremely accurate
grading of used pipe. Eight separate solid-state elec- DRILCO SHOULDER REFACING

lation, and a permanent record. journal magazine article reprints are available from
Drilco to help the customer in preventive maintenance
programs. (Write the Reader Service Dept. at Drilco
for more information.)
In addition to the specific services mentioned on this
page, Drilco performs other types of inspection. These
includes the inspection and survey of line pipe, weld
inspection and magnetic-particle inspection of rig
equipment.
Drilco's original purpose and still the main factor in all
types of inspection is defect detection followed by
assisting the customer in defect prevention. By finding
problems before they become problems, Drilco can
save you rig time. And by correcting most of the
normal everyday thread cracks and shoulder damage
right at the rig, Drilco can also save you money.
