Minimum income threshold increase for
immigration to affect new Indian migrants

Woodhouse on Wednesday,
April 19, announced a package
of changes designed to better
manage immigration and improve
the long-term labour market
contribution of temporary and
permanent migration.
Remuneration thresholds for
permanent and temporary skilled
migrants will be introduced along
with a one-off pathway to residence
for lower-skilled migrants already
in the South Island.
Changes to permanent
immigration settings include
introducing two remuneration
thresholds for applicants
applying for residence under
the Skilled Migrant Category
(SMC), which will complement
the current qualifications and
occupation framework.
First, the minimum income
threshold for jobs that are currently
considered skilled is increased from
the current $45,000 to $49,000,
to align with the New Zealand
median income of $48,859.
Second, the income threshold for
jobs that are not considered skilled
currently, but still are well paid, will
be set at 1.5 times the New Zealand
median income at $73,299.

he top Bollywood stars
landed in Auckland on
Thursday, April 20 for the
New Zealand leg of the Da Bang
tour. The chaos at the Auckland
Airport was evident of the huge
fan base for the top Bollywood
stars that included Salman Khan,
BipashaBasu, Prabhu Deva,
Badshah, Maniesh Paul and
Daisy Shah.
Although the flight was delayed
by almost half an hour, the fan
started flocking towards the
international arrivals of the

Indian taxi driver assaulted
in South Auckland

A
n Indian taxi driver was violently
assaulted by a group of young adults
in Manurewa, South Auckland, in
the wee hours of Tuesday, April 18.
The driver Vineet Mahajan, 48, was parked
at the taxi rank at the back of Manurewa
South Mall when a group of three young
adults had approached and jumped into the
car asking to take them to an address nearby.
Indian Weekender spoke with the driver, who
was badly bruised on the face and in too
much pain and shock to go to work today.
Generally I keep my car locked in the
night, but unfortunately it was not locked
yesterday night when that group of young
boys managed to jump into the car.
As per our companys policy, we ask our
passengers for fare upfront during the night
time as we have been ripped of many times in
the past.
So I requested them to pay at least $15-
20 in advance, and the difference could be
adjusted after the completion of the journey,
Mr Mahajan told Indian Weekender.
They declined to pay anything in advance,
to which I politely requested them to leave
my cab, but they were not keen to leave the
car as well.
When I asked them to please leave my
car otherwise I would have to call the cops,
they got infuriated and started hitting me
with punches.
One of them quickly came out of the
car and started kicking me after opening
the door.

has been robbed twice in the last
three days.
According to a witness, one male armed
with a Scout-Bowie-Knife entered the store
around 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19
and robbed the store of cash and cigarettes.
The owner was at the counter when the
incident happened. A female accomplice of
the robber was waiting outside the petrol
station in a car and both drove off quickly
after the incident.

olice across Tamaki Makaurau has
launched Operation Dukan on
Wednesday, April 19, which will aim
to engage with small business owners in the
dairy and alcohol retail sector and provide
them with prevention advice and support.
Inspector Nga Wati Chaplow says police
are aware that the retail community has been
shaken by recent robberies across Auckland
and we want to reassure them that we are
hearing their concerns.
We will have 15 officers working full time
for the next three weeks to engage dairy
and liquor store owners. We will provide
them with a safety audit of their premises
and discuss what options are available to
them. This could include installing CCTV
cameras, better lighting or even rearranging
their store.
We will be also utilising our ethnic officers
who speak either Hindi and or Punjabi to
ensure our messaging is well communicated
to the owner, family and staff members. The
reason we are doing this is we have found
that members of our Indian community have
been over-represented as victims in these
types of offences, Inspector Chaplow said.
Operation Dukan was fiirst run in
Counties Manukau in 2009 and again
in 2014 engaging with almost 300
business owners.
Those retailers who took part in the
Counties Manukau operation said they
found it to be extremely useful and it further
enhanced their relationship with police.

101 and running: The spirit of athlete Man Kaur

undred and one year old Man
Kaur has travelled all the way from
Punjab, India to participate in the
World Master Games 2017 to be held in
Auckland from Friday, April 21. The 101-
year old athlete had previously competed in
other international games in 100m, 200m,
400g Javelin and Shot Put in the 100-plus
category and holds four world records made
in Sacramento and Vancouver last year when
she turned 100.
Considered the fastest centenarian, Mrs
Kaur will run 100m on Monday, April
24, race 200m and hurl 2 kg shot put on
Wednesday, April 26 and conclude her run
with the 400g javelin throw on Thursday.
Mrs Kaur finished her 100m last year in
1 minute 43 seconds and aimed to break
her record and finish the race in 1 minute
10 seconds.
Her 79-year old son Gurdev is also
competing in the 100m, 200m sprints and
long jump event next week. He won a gold
medal in high jump senior category at World
Master Games 2013 held in the USA.
Mrs Kaur got off from her car and started
walking towards Lovelock Track at Wesley
Community Centre in Mt Roskill with the
support from her son Gurdev. She stood
still on the tracks for a few minutes, took a
deep breath and then she was ready to race.
Indian Weekender met the great grandmother
while she practised at Lovelock track earlier
this week.
In a brief conversation with Indian
Weekender, Mrs Kaur shared her motivation
for the sports, the secret to her fitness and her
aim to gather four more gold medals this year
and make the count 20. Mrs Kaur spoke in
Punjabi while her son Gurdev translated the
interview and shared some of her views.

uckland Malayali Samajam, the
largest ethnic Samajam in Oceania
commemorated the traditional
festival of Easter and Vishu in its richness on
Monday, April, 17 at Royal Oak Intermediate
School in Royal Oak.
The Auckland Malayali Samajam has

events and festivals for the Malayali and the
extended Indian community in Auckland.
The organization hosts Yoga camps,
Christmas and Easter celebrations and also
the cultural events during Diwali and engages
with the larger community in Auckland.
The annual general body meeting of
Auckland Malayali Samajam was held
alongside the Easter celebrations on Monday.
The new governing body for the current
year was elected at the annual meeting. Dr.
Michael Manjaloor led the election in the

Weve seen a significant turnaround in net
migration from a net outflow of around 4,100
in the year to February 2012, to a net inflow
of 71,300 in the year to February 2017.
The main drivers of that turnaround are
more Kiwis coming home (9,000) and fewer
leaving (28,000) making up around half of
that change.
We are also seeing 21,000 additional
Working Holiday Visa holders coming
here each year, 7,000 more international
students, and 3,000 more Australians crossing
the ditch.
We cant - and dont want to - stop Kiwis
from returning home. And reducing the
number of working holiday makers could
jeopardise opportunities for New Zealanders
wanting to travel or study abroad.
However, there are other areas of
immigration that we can and do actively
control. But its not as simple as turning off
the immigration tap its about making sure
we get the balance right.

most economic benefits to New Zealand.
The first remuneration threshold will be set
at $48,859 a year and applicants who earn
below that threshold will have no pathway to
residence. The second threshold will be set at
$73,299 and applicants will automatically be
considered as high-skilled.
We are making changes to Essential Skills
work visas to reinforce the temporary nature
of work visas and to help manage the number
and settlement expectations of new migrants.
We also recently reviewed the New
Zealand Residence programme to moderate
the increasing numbers of migrants applying
for residence.
These changes demonstrate that the
Government is taking a responsible, pragmatic
approach to managing immigration.

settlement which will benefit some of
our health sectors lowest paid workers.
The wage boost follows the TerraNova pay
equity claim brought by E t (previously the
Service and Food Workers Union) on behalf
of care worker Kristine Bartlett.
The settlement over the next five years will
deliver pay increases between 15 to 50 per
cent to 55,000 workers in aged and disability
residential care, and home and community
support services.
It will help to ensure we have a higher
paid, more skilled and engaged workforce
caring for around 110,000 of New Zealands
most vulnerable.
Around 20,000 of this predominately
female workforce are currently on the
minimum wage of $15.75 an hour. The
settlement means that on July 1 they will
move to at least $19 an hour, a 21 per cent
pay rise.
For a fulltime worker, this means they
will be taking home around an extra $100 a
week, which is over $5000 a year.
This pay increase will also help to
reduce the high turnover of our care and
support workers across aged and disability
residential care, and home and community
support services across Manukau and our
ethnic communities

will be funded through an increase of $1.85
billion to the health budget and $192 million
to ACC.
There may also be an increase in
costs for people in aged residential care
facilities, whose assets keep them above the
subsidy threshold. This will be determined

Over the past six years, the Government
has invested heavily in strengthening the
care and support workforce in recognition
of the vital role they play in the lives of
many of New Zealands most vulnerable
population groups.
In 2011 we introduced the minimum wage
for sleepover shifts for night-time support
in residential care services. An in 2015 we
began phasing in a new policy which meant
care and support workers are now paid for
travel time and mileage between client visits.
We have also increased the minimum
wage by $3.75 an hour since we came into
office, and last year we increased Working for
Families by $12.50 a week.
The Government is committed to
supporting hardworking New Zealanders
and their families.

A
NZAC Day, celebrated on April 25 every year is the day our nation remembers her
forefathers (many of who never returned home) who fought in wars far away from
home in the two World Wars.
Not many Kiwi-Indians in New Zealand, especially those of younger generation are
aware of any Indian connection with the ANZAC spirit a spirit which defines New
Zealands national identity.
As a relatively recent and a fast growing migrant group of this beautiful country, it is
a matter of seeming disquiet to be seen disconnected with the most important national
identity narrative of this country. Although not entirely unusual, as many new migrant
groups all over the world initially struggle to develop a connect with national identity
narratives of their respective chosen countries of residence.
Commonly, immigrant groups everywhere around the world have to find innovative
ways to connect with symbols, traditions, culture, language, politics and all other cultural
artefacts that define a nation.
However, rarely does any immigrant groups anywhere in the world gets a chance to find
a connect with the main spirit of national identity narrative that defines their respective
country. The spirit of ANZAC represents New Zealands national identity, and any
opportunity to connect with this eternal spirit would make a community or social group
feel eternal part of the New Zealand nation.
Now, the Kiwi-Indian community has that opportunity to establish an emotional chord
with the national identity narrative that constitutes the very essence of New Zealand nation.
An exhibition currently underway in Wellington Public Library, titled Honour and
Duty: A Tribute to Sikh Valour organised by the Sikh Foundation NZ remembers the
contribution of 100 Indians out of 150 odd Indians living then in New Zealand in the early
1900s. The exhibition informs that over 100 Kiwi-Indian men (it would not be inappropriate
to describe those Indian-descent men as Kiwi-Indians) had enlisted themselves for the war
and four of them actually ended up fighting with 32 more in the reserves list.
This is not insignificant information, currently forgotten or not celebrated enough either
within Kiwi-Indian community itself or beyond the community within broad contours that Auckland Weather forecast for the week April 22 - 28

This piece seeks to raise a voice that probably time has come for the Kiwi-Indian
community to brag about Indian connection with the spirit of ANZAC.

cogent and credible line on
secularism, the Congress
will have to articulate a new
position to find its way back into
the political reckoning.
For a start, the party will have
to realise that its efforts to delink
religion from politics, or the church
from the state the essence of
secularism went off track because
it identified the church too
closely with Hinduism and did not
pay enough attention to keep Islam
also at a distance from the state.
Because of this tactical error, the
Congress played into the hands
of the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) which made no secret of its
closeness to Hinduism and accused
the Congress of being partial to
Islam for the sake of Muslim votes.
This is a factor which A.K. Antony,
among others in the Congress,
acknowledged in a report on
the partys defeat in the last
general election.
However, the report banked
on run-of-the-mill explanations
for the partys setback such as
infighting, demoralisation among
the workers, the absence of pre-
poll alliances, the partys corrupt
image and communal polarisation
orchestrated by the BJP.

chillies in a tomato-based gravy
Introduction: This preparation gets its

kadhai (wok). The kadhai is a traditional deep
and heavy-bottomed pan, a classic must-have
in an Indian kitchen. A beloved kadhai may
even be passed down from one generation
of a family to the next. Those who cook
regularly in their favorite kadhai sometimes
even make the extravagant claim that a curry
cooked in any other pot just wont taste the
same. The addition of capsicum adds an
extra crunch to it.
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 35 minutes

250g paneer cut into bite-sized cubes
1 large capsicum, julienned
5 whole red chillies
2 tsp coriander seeds
4 tsp garlic paste

1 Tbsp dried fenugreek leaves (kasuri
