What are magnets? How do they work?

A Maglev thus requires three major components:-

A large electrical power source

Metal coils lining a guideway or track
Large guidance magnets attached to the underside of the train

Maglev track

Magnetized coils run along the track caleed a guideway. These repel the large magnets on the
train's undercarriage, allowing the train to levitate between 0.39 and 3.93 inches (1 to 10 cm)
above the guideway. Once the train is levitated, power is supplied to the coils within the
guideway walls to create a unique system of magnetic fields that pull and push the train along
the guideway. The electric current supplied to the coils in the guideway walls is constantly
alternating to change the polarity of the magnetized coils. This change in polarity causes the
magnetic field in front of the train to pull the vehicle forward, while the magnetic field behind
the train adds more forward thrust.
Maglev trains float on a cushion of air, eliminating friction. This lack of friction and the trains'
aerodynamic designs allow these trains to reach unprecedented ground transportation speeds of
more than 310 mph (500 kph). Developers say that maglev trains will eventually link cities that
are up to 1,000 miles (1,609 km) apart. At 310 mph, you could travel from Paris to Rome in just
over two hours.

When something becomes superconducting, i.e. it has zero electrical resistance, usually at an
extremely low temperature, it excludes a magnetic field. So, if a magnet is placed on a
superconducting material, it levitates.

This is the principle that is behind magnetic levitation trains. The superconducting coils are
typically placed on the train itself, and are cooled by some liquified gas, such as liquid helium,
and the rails are made up of electromagnets. This produces the levitation. To get motion, pulses
of current are sent down the rail magnets, and work a bit like peristalsis.

The motion is completely frictionless, apart from air resistance, so they have very streamlined
cross-sections. Such trains can reach remarkably high speeds. Typical top speeds are close to
300mph.

force field lifting the coach. Varing the voltage to the seperate magnets will cause an imbalance
and propel the coach forward. Hope this is helpful. Artu

Magnetic Levitation Trains float over a guide-way using the basic principles of magnets to
replace the old steel wheel and track trains

Opposite poles attract and like poles repel each other. This is the basic principle behind
electromagnetic propulsion. Electromagnets are similar to other magnets in that they attract
metal objects, but the magnetic pull is temporary.

The magnetic field created in this wire-and-battery experiment is the simple idea behind a
maglev train rail system. There are three components to this system:

1.A large electrical power source

2.Metal coils lining a guide-way or track

3.Large guidance magnets attached to the underside of the train

Maglev train has an engine which differs from a conventional electric engine. The magnetic field
created by the electrified coils in the guide-way walls and the track combine to propel the train.

The magnetized coil running along the track, called a guide-way, repels the large magnets on the
train's undercarriage, allowing the train to levitate between 1 to 10 centimeters above the guide-
way. Once the train is levitated, power is supplied to the coils within the guide-way walls to create
a unique system of magnetic fields that pull and push the train along the guide-way. The electric
current supplied to the coils in the guide-way walls is constantly alternating to change the
polarity of the magnetized coils. This change in polarity causes the magnetic field in front of the
train to pull the vehicle forward, while the magnetic field behind the train adds more forward
thrust.

Maglev trains float on a cushion of air, eliminating friction. This lack of friction and the trains'
aerodynamic designs allow these trains to reach unprecedented ground transportation speeds of
more than 500 kph. With this speed you could cover the distance between Mumbai and
Ahmedabad in 1 hour if the train runs non-stop.

Ever played with two magnets? Same concept. A magnet has a positive and a negative end, same
sign ends attract, opposite sign ends repel.
