Rhetorical Analysis

For my rhetorical analysis, I will be looking at a paper I wrote for my

Business 1101 class last semester. There were two parts to this paper, a

career map (Part A), and a discussion of developing a career map (Part B).

For the first part, I had to create a four-year plan and set goals for myself. For

the second part, I wrote about the definition and purpose of career maps, the

importance of setting goals, strategies for achieving goals, and the need for

making changes and adjustments to career maps. I had a very candid tone to

communicate to my reader the idea that career maps and goals are essential

to grow as a professional. The purpose of the paper was to help me over the

next four years and convince an upcoming student to create their own career

map and goals.

Part A began with a list of ten goals that I wished to achieve by the end

of my college career. These goals were made for all aspects of my life,

including academic, career, health, and social goals. A social goal I had was

to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. This uses pathos by

applying emotion to my paper, allowing the reader to connect to me on a

personal level. The goals provided me with an idea of what I should be

working towards for the next four years. Some other examples of goals I plan
Freeman-3

to achieve over the years are maintain a 3.6 GPA, join an organization,

participate in an internship, and graduating.

The next part of the paper had an A, B format going back and forth

eight times between class schedule and lists of appointments and events I

should plan to attend each semester. It gave me a reference to go back to for

the following years. This showed me a good plan of what to expect over the

course of the next four years at UNC Charlotte. Part A ended with a list of

definitions about skill development for business and universal work skills.

Communication Written I can better my writing skills in Writing & Inquiry

Academic Context II. This is one example sentences I used to show how I

can gain this skill. I should be working to obtain these skills while Im still in

school. This proves my credibility as a writer and uses logos to appeal to my

academic discourse.

I began part B writing about the purpose and benefits of a career map.

This included the definition of a career map. A career map is a written

document that helps to determine goals, develop skills for the future, and

help you to become successful. Creating a career map helps to provide

guidance to unanswered questions. The definition helped to establish the

purpose of a career map which I show in my beginning two sentences. I then

gave examples of resources you can find within a career map like advisors

and professors. I ended the paragraph informing the reader about the

evidence of activities Ive done to get my point across.

The paper moved on to prove the importance of setting goals by

explaining what goals can do for future success. The next sentence showed

how setting goals can have long term benefits. I gave example of goals I set

to provide a guideline to my reader. One of my goals is to Participate in a

minimum of one study abroad program before graduation. This gave the

reader a source in which they could start their list of goals.

After writing my specific and realistic goals, I wrote strategies I use and

planned to use for achieving these goals. Writing down your goals is the first

step in the right direction. With this sentence, I could provide information

through my personal experience. Some strategies included resources from

the textbook to illustrate the importance of constructing SMART goals. I

illustrated the process in which you achieve SMART goals. I finished my

paper by discussing the need for flexibility and change in developing the

career map. My paper mainly appealed to logos because it was a business

paper. The whole first part was based off facts and careful planning. There

were examples of pathos throughout the second part of my paper so that the

student reading my paper would feel connected to me through my writing

and want to make a career map for themselves.

From writing my Commitment to success paper, I learned what to

expect over the next four years. I should expect a very busy schedule and to

attend a lot of seminars and activities. As a writer, it taught me how to

address an audience of students that are about to follow in my footsteps. I

could give advice about how to plan for a college career. It also taught me

the importance of rereading papers before turning them in. I thought my

writing got a point across to the reader. I did so by providing examples,

personal evidence, and definitions. My writing had a few patterns. In Part A, I

had a pattern of coming up with events and meetings to plan by referring to

plans from the previous semester. The language for the paper was proper

since the tone of the paper had to attract business manner.

Overall, what I learned about my writing is how to better attract to the

reader and appeal to logos and pathos. The purpose of the paper was to help

myself and someone else understand career maps and their uses. I was able

to give the reader a good set of information on what I was writing about. By

doing so I got my purpose across.
