When you hear my story, I bet you wont believe it. It sounds really unbelievable, but it
actually happened.

Well, as I was walking through the park the other day, enjoying the nature all around me the
birds singing, the frogs in the small pond, the flowing stream and so on, suddenly a woman
knocked me right off my feet, grabbed at my clothes, and ran off through the trees. I was so
surprised that I didnt shout or go after her. Fortunately, she didnt take anything from me, just
my left shoe. Can you imagine it? Bizarre, isnt it? However, there were a lot of other strange
things about this woman.

She was about a hundred and ninety centimetres tall, heavy built, with long wavy hair. She
was probably in er his or her late 30s and was wearing a black and white dress, a light
red sweater, and she er or he was wearing a pair of basketball shoes. I didnt get a good
look at the persons face, but well ... uh .... the person . . . er had a beard. When I went to
the police to tell them my story they were not surprised at all, and said the bearded woman
had struck again.

As I learnt it from the police officer, it was a man who dresses up like a woman and, for some
unknown reason, takes the left shoe from his victims. Hes really quite harmless, though, and
he usually returns the shoe to the scene of the crime a couple of days later.

Nevertheless, Ive decided Ill just take off my left shoe every time I walk through the park.

Man: So, what do you want to do tomorrow?

Woman: Well, lets look at this city guide here.
Man: Okay
Woman: Uh, heres something interesting.
Man: Oh?
Woman: Why dont we first visit the art museum in the morning?
Man: Okay. I like that idea. And where do you want to eat lunch?
Woman: How about going to an Indian restaurant?
Man: An Indian one?
Woman: Yeah, the guide recommends one in the city centre a few blocks from the museum.
Man: Now that sounds great. After that, what do you think about visiting the zoo?
Woman: Oh, umm, well, I dont really know
Man: Well, it says here that there are some very unique animals not found anywhere else.
Woman: Well, to tell the truth, Im not really interested in going there.
Man: Really?
Woman: Yeah. Why dont we go shopping instead? There are supposed to be some really
nice places to pick up souvenirs.
Man: Nah, I dont think thats a good idea. We only have few travellers cheques left, and I
only have fifty Euros left in cash.
Woman: No problem. We can use YOUR credit card to pay for MY new clothes.
Man: Oh, no. I remember the last time you used MY credit card for YOUR purchases.
Woman: Oh well. Lets take the tram down to the seashore and walk along the beach.
Man: Now, that sounds like a wonderful plan.

I have been to a Japanese public bath. Well, its nothing like visiting a swimming pool in the
States but its quite an experience.

You know, when you go to a public bath, first, you take off your shoes before you enter.

Then, you pay an entrance fee to the man or woman at the front counter. Next, you get
undressed in the dressing room. And I was very surprised . . . and a little embarrassed to see
that the woman who took my money was sitting on a platform where she had a clear view of
the mens side of the dressing room. But I realized that this allows the workers to keep an eye
on peoples belongings while they are in the bath. The other embarrassing thing is that you
dont wear anything. Then you go into the main bathing area and wash your body while
sitting on a small stool about 40 centimetres high. Getting used to bathing in that position was
really hard. Sometimes, people even wash each others backs.

Well, after youve rinsed off all the soap, they usually have two or three large baths where you
can soak for a while.

You share the bath with other people. Traditionally, the bath played an important role in the
community. It gave neighbours an opportunity to socialise while bathing.

When youve all finished bathing, people relax in the dressing room by reading newspapers,
drinking tea or juice, or talking to friends. Its quite an experience.

Hungarian Salami Made by the Bende Family in the USA

Throughout Europe, Hungarian Salami is the best known and many people consider it the
most delicious of all. Hungarian Brand Salami is made right here in the USA, where we try to
continue that tradition of Old World Flavor while combining it with the very highest standards
of quality. Have we succeeded? People who have tried it say yes, they like it better than the
original.
Hungarian Brand Salami is available in two distinct styles: TLI and CSABAI and we
cordially invite you to try both. Tli (which means winter in Hungarian) is called so
because before the advent of modern refrigeration, salami could only be made during the
winter months. Its mild taste is achieved by blending the finest spices with the highest quality
meats.
Our Csabai salami is for the more adventurous. Named after the city of Csaba, where it was
first made centuries ago, it combines chopped meat blended with the world famous Hungarian
Paprika. Whether you select our Tli or Csabai, you can be sure you will get the very best
salami. The reason we make this claim is because of the way we produce our salamis. We
dont manufacture them in some giant, impersonal processing plant. We create them in a
manner that closely follows the traditional Old World way.
Each step of the process is overseen personally by a member of the Bende family, who
brought these recipes to America decades ago.

Trnava, a tiny town in western Slovakia, is the new face of European car manufacturing. In
January, Frances PSA Peugeot chose it as the site for a new assembly plant that will start
turning out 300,000 passenger cars a year in 2006. The French companys investment follows
a joint venture with Japans Toyota to build an assembly plant in the Czech Republic.
Meanwhile, Britains MG Rover is going to make a big investment in Poland, and Renault is
preparing to launch a new budget model at its factory in Romania.
The appeal of central Europe is obvious: cheaper labour costs (roughly one-fifth of those in
the European Union); good infrastructure; and a good location at the heart of a soon-to-be
enlarged EU.
Germanys Volkswagen announced last year that it was shifting part of its production from
Spain to Bratislava.
Louis Schweitzer, chairman of Renault, thinks that Toyotas factory in northern France which
was opened in 2001, will be the last large car plant in western Europe.
Peugeots boss is not only opening factories in eastern Europe; he is also hoping for growth in
the market in the long term, though new car sales in central Europe are a small fraction of
those in the European Union.

Restaurant strike on menu?

Waiters and dishwashers went on strike at Club 21 and La Caravelle on Tuesday in a

dispute over increased health insurance costs. Management at both restaurants said they
wished to get back to the negotiating table on Tuesday in hopes of cutting short the strike.

Our service staff have the best jobs in the restaurant business; they will still have the best
jobs when this job action is over, said Diana Biederman, a spokeswoman for 21.
Biederman also said the restaurant would not open for its usual lunch or dinner crowd, but a
few long-scheduled private parties would be staffed with replacement workers.

Rita Jammet, a co-owner of La Caravelle, said it would be closed for lunch but would open
for dinner.

About 10 La Caravelle workers waved yellow flags with the unions acronym, HERE Hotel
Employees & Restaurant Employees Union outside the restaurant on Tuesday morning,
hours before it would have opened for lunch. Im fighting for my rights and what I think is
right for the whole restaurant, said Alejandro Angeles, a waiter at La Caravelle.

A bartender at 21 for 17 years, said workers made the decision to walk out at 11:30 p.m.,
and about 20 workers showed up outside 21 at 7 a.m. 50 workers were outside 21 at
lunchtime, shouting Shame on you! to the few patrons who went in.

Tips When Travelling to Russia

Give yourself plenty of time to obtain your visa. If your travel agent is arranging this, make
sure the agency has all your information at least a month before you plan to depart, if not
more. If you are travelling independently, make sure you have your visa application and
invitation sent in at least a month before you need to go, in case there are any problems. You
can, of course, get visas in a rush when necessary. Same day service is even possible now at
the Russian embassy, but you will pay quite a bit extra. Take along some spare passport
photos in case you need to get a visa for another country (separate visas are needed to the
countries of the former USSR).
If you are travelling independently, always confirm hotel reservations in advance, by fax or
telex, if at all possible. Your travel agent should also be able to do this for you.
Our Russia Survival Guide has a complete listing of 25 health and personal items we suggest
you take along. We cannot list them all here. Some of the most important things are:
prescription and over-the-counter medicines you suspect you might need; Pepto-Bismol
and/or Immodium; a small tube of laundry soap; a photocopy of your passport and visa kept
separate from the original documents; aspirin; antibiotics; a spare roll of toilet paper.

wrong. First, the new self-service arrangement at lunch was not rather disorganised. Second, the service at dinner was very
slow. Third, the general standard of meals was very poor.
I do not usually complain but as a regular customer, I am sure you will be interested in my comments.

Yours faithfully,
Andreani Mastroanni

Dear Sir,

My company provides tailor-made holidays to different countries world-wide. I intend to visit Hungary with my wife in early
July, 2004, and I hope to take the opportunity to make a few business contacts and perhaps add Hungary to our destinations.

Please indicate if you are interested in future cooperation. I would like to spend 3 nights in Budapest before moving on to the
Lake Balaton area, so you can meet us in person at either places if you wish.

Yours faithfully,
W. K. Wilkins
