Lesson
This activity plan will consist of three activities that will be performed on the computer. These
Summary:
activities will concentrate on learning numbers by classifying objects within a given category, count the
number of objects in each category and sort the categories by count, understands the relationship
between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality, count forward from a given number
within the known sequence, enhance letter recognition and demonstrates organization and basic features
of print, demonstrates understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds (phonemes), letter sounds
recognition and knows and applies grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words,
correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size, compose simple shapes to form
larger shapes, model shapes in the world by building shapes from components and drawing shapes. This
will allow the children to become familiar with the computer and how it works.
This first day the children will be taking turns using the computers accessing abcya.com to play math
games (Number Match, Patterns, Number Bubble Skip Counting). The second day they will access
games dealing with the Alphabet (Alphabet Bubble, Alphabet Slider Puzzle, Alphabet Monster Mansion
Match). The third day the children will access games dealing with shapes (Shape Match, Shape
Patterns, and Shape Construction). While the four children are accessing the computer games, the other
children will be in learning stations throughout the room (manipulative, home living, science, art, blocks
and cars and writing areas).

Estimated These activities will be performed over a 60-minute time period for three
Duration:
consecutive days. The groups of children will have 30 minute increments to access
the computer to play the learning games. There are four computers with each
group of two children having 30 minute increments. If needed, we can expand the
lesson to incorporate further learning experiences.

Preparatio What preparation is needed? I will be accessing the learning games to become familiar
n of with them. Prepare the children for each lesson by talking about the computer and the
materials games they will be playing. Prepare open-ended questions.
and
environme What materials will be used? Four computers, manipulatives, home living materials,
nt science materials, art materials, blocks and cars and writing materials.

How will the learning environment be set up? Eight children will be sat at the computers
and flour children will be playing in learning areas throughout the room waiting for their
turn to play on the computers. Every twenty minutes the children will rotate for their turn
on the computers and in the learning areas.
Instructional Procedures:
I will explain to the children that we will be working on our ABCs, Numbers and Shapes throughout the week. We will
be accessing ABC, Math, and Shape games at http://www.abcya.com/ on the four computers eight children at a time.
Each group of two children will have a 30-minute increment with each child playing for 5 minutes with the other child
helping them and then trading positions. The rest of the class will be learning as they play in the manipulative, home
living, science, writing, art or block and car areas waiting their turn.

Day 1 - I will help them access the abcya.com web site which has ABC learning games for the computer. I will give
them 5 minutes of instruction on what we will be learning, how to get to and play the games we have decided to access.
These ABC games (Alphabet Bubble, Alphabet Slider Puzzle and Alphabet Monster Mansion Match) are games that will
enhance letter recognition and demonstrates organization and basic features of print, demonstrates understanding of
spoken words, syllables and sounds (phonemes), letter sounds recognition and knows and applies grade level phonics and
word analysis skills in decoding words. I feel that once I have instructed the children on how to play the games they will
be able to do it for themselves. Each group of children will get 30-minutes taking turns every five minutes with their
partner. I will be there if the children need help finding the games and maneuvering within the game. Letting the
children play the game themselves helps to familiarize them with the computer and how it works. The groups of two
children will be helpful if one does not understand what to do they can ask the other one. Each child will play for five
minutes with the other child helping them. They will continue to take turns and help each other. I will be walking around
the computers to assist them if needed.

Day 2 I will help them access the abcya.com web sites number games. I will give them 5 minutes of instruction on how
to get to the number games and how to play the game. These games will help the children learn numbers by classifying
objects within a given category, count the number of objects in each category and sort the categories by count,
understands the relationship between numbers and quantities; and connect counting to cardinality, and count forward from
a given number within the known sequence. There will be eight children at the four computers playing in 30-minute
increments where they will play the Number Match, Patterns, and Number Bubble Skip Counting games. These games
are child friendly and will be accessed by them with my help if needed. Again, the groups of two will be helpful if one
child doesnt understand what to do they can ask the other child. Each child will play for five minutes with the other
child helping them. They will continue to take turns and help each other throughout the 30 minute increments. I will be
walking around the computers to assist them if needed.

Day 3 I will help them access the abcya.com web site to learn about shapes. I will give the children 5 minutes of
instruction on how to get to the shape games and how to play them. The games the children will play are Shape Match,
Shape Patterns, and Shape Construction. The children will be able to correctly name shapes regardless of their
orientations or overall size, compose simple shapes to form larger shapes, and model shapes in the world by building
shapes from components and drawing shapes. The children will then begin to play the games in 5 minute increments at
which time they will switch with the other child who will be helping them. There again will be eight children at the four
computers for 30-minute increments to play the shape games. I will be walking around the computers to assist them if
needed.

After each day, we will discuss what we learned on the computer and I will ask the children questions to scaffold the
lessons. These questions could be something like Can someone tell me what the letter B sounds like. Can you give me
an example of something in the room that starts with the letter B. Math--Anakin can you find me 5 red cars and count
them? Josh, can you find 10 blue counting bears? Aleya can you pick me out 5 bees, 5 frogs, 5 butterflies and put them
together? Put all the bees together, all the frogs together, and all the butterflies together. Shapes--Brielle can you find
something in the room that has the triangle shape in it, something with a circle shape in it, and something with the
rectangle shape in it?

Day 4 I will instruct the children that we will be drawing pictures using the shapes we learned in our lesson the day
before. I will instruct the children that they will take the different shaped stencils and plain paper to draw their pictures.
This picture can be anything you want to draw using the shapes provided. The children will then take the shapes and draw
a picture.

Day 5--The last day of the week the children will be able to pick which game they would like to revisit. I will be there to
help them access the game they want to play. The children will then play the game they pick for a 20-minute increment
with only one child at each computer. Again, I will be there if they need further instruction. The other children will be
able to access their I-Pad/Tablet for more learning games.

http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Early-Learning/Early-Learning-Content-Standards
This site is one that gives the standards for Social-Emotional Development, Approaches Toward
Learning, Cognitive Development and General Knowledge (including Mathematics, Science and
Social Studies), Language and Literacy Development, and Physical Well-Being and Motor
Development for Birth through Kindergarten. The children would benefit from this sit e by the
teacher accessing it for planning the curriculum to develop the childrens development and
learning. These standards promote the understanding of early learning and development,
provide a comprehensive and coherent set of early childhood educational expectations for
childrens development and learning, and guide the design and implementation of curriculum,
assessment and instructional practices with young children
(http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Early-Learning/Early-Learning-Content-Standards ). These
standards will help the children prepare for college and a career.

Letting the children bring in their own iPads to access learning games would be an extension to
the curriculum. For those who do not have one, we have one they can all have a turn on.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated

(changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: If I had a child that
mastered these skills quickly, I would let them pick a game that would enhance their abilities. I
would find the child a game that was more difficult to figure out and maneuver to challenge their
skills.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be
struggling with the material:
I would set up a letter sounds club, a number club and a shapes club. I would make up a chart
for each club and once the children mastered these skills, they could add their name to the
chart. I would also send a letter home to the parents about the charts and how they could help
the children get their name on the chart. Each month a progress report would be sent home to
the parents to let them know what their child had mastered so far. Even a little help from their
parents to get them where they need to be is worth it. I would give these children a little extra
computer time so they could master their skills.

Vocabulary: Computer, Shape picture, Letter Sounds Club, Number Club, and Shapes Club. These terms
will need to be explained to the children.
