What are the Zones?

Project

Common Core Standard:

Objective: Students will apply what has been learned about the zones of a cave
to create a bulletin board.

Materials:

Brown Paper
Lined Paper
Index Cards
Magnetic Tape
Plastic Sheet Protectors
Animal cut-outs
Markers
Staples
Cave zones handout
Cave Dwellers Book

Motivation:

I will be telling students that we will be doing a group project that will be
displayed in our classroom.
Review the zones of the cave.

Instruction:

The lesson project will be broken up into days.


o Day 1: Assign groups and discuss the project. Begin by showing an
example of how one zone will be filled out and go over the rubric.
o Day 2: Start researching facts and writing down three facts about the
zone including
Is there light?
Life in the zone
Temperature- Does it change?
o Day 3-5 (If needed) : Students will begin writing facts and showing
me for editing, possibly moving onto the final draft
o Day 4: Students will continue working on the zones edit and write
final copies
o Day 5: Work on the art portion, color and paste animals to the zone.
o Day 6: Students will have the opportunity to play with the board and
quiz each other.

Guided Practice:

Show student how to look for information in text, and what areas they
should highlight.
Model for students how to write a fact, using complete sentences and
correct punctuation.

Individual Practice:

Students will be arranged in their groups and can begin looking for their
specific information. They will be able to use the Cave Dwellers book and
Cave Packet as resources.
I will walk around to sit down with individual groups and observe as well
offer
Students each will have roles where a certain set of people write facts,
some color and paste the animals and select which are in that specific
zone, and another will help design the cave area.

Assessment:

We will play a jeopardy game about the zones of a cave and use buzzers.

Modifications:

One student will be wearing an FM system


I will be wearing a lapel microphone
Repeating directions for student who have troubling processing
information
Chunking tasks into smaller parts.
Check for understanding of directions.
Preferential Seating
Frequent feedback and praise
Extra time to complete classwork for a few group of students.
