Chapter 5 BEAMS WITH SHEAR REINFORCEMEN

Note: Input celles are marked with yellow

INPUT TABLE

Input Section dimensions:

Width b = 12 in.
Effective depth , d = 21.5 in.
Input an external factored shear:
Vu = 128 K
Input Material properties:
Concrete 28-day compressive strenght, f'c = 4 ksi
Yield strength of steel, fyt = 60 ksi

Design coefficient = 0.75

= 1

DESIGN PROCEDURE

Step 1 Determine the concrete strength

Vc = 24.5 K

Vc/2 = 12.2 K

Step 2 Check if the concrete strength is in the following limits:

-1- Vu < Vc/2 NO

-2- Vc/2 < Vu < Vc NO

-3- Vu > Vc YES

Shear reinforcement is needed!! , go to Step 4

Step 3 Required minimum shear reinforcement

Av/s = 0.0114 in2/ft

Choose stirrup # 3
Number of legs 2

Required spacing s = 10 in.

Step 4 Calculation of shera reinforcement carried by web reinforcement

Vc1 = 65.3 K
Vc2 = 130.5388 K

Vs = 138.032 K

Choose stirrup # 3
Number of legs 2

Check if Vs is in the following limits:

-1- Vs Vc1 NO

-2- Vc1 Vs Vc2 NO

-3- Vs > Vc2 YES, the section is not adequate. Increase cross section of the beam

Therefore

Required spacing is:

s= 2 in.
INFORCEMENT
ase cross section of the beam
