Lesson Topic: How the Internet is changing languages

Lesson Aims:
- To help students understanding Internet language, realizing the different kinds of languages
(formal and informal)
- To make students aware of how Internet is changing languages;
- To make them improve their written and reading skills;
- To guide students in order to understand when we should use social network.

Didactic Material: Whiteboard, whiteboard markers.

Teaching method: Interactive, inductive approach and contextualized way.
Assessment: Students are going to decode some words used on the Internet and put them in
English language with teachers help.

Activity Procedures Time

Review 5
Firstly, teacher makes a brief review about last class.

Secondly. teacher asks students questions such as: How

often do you use your cell phones? What apps do you use 5
Warm up more?

Thirdly, teacher gives a text to students about how Internet is

changing language and read it aloud with students help and 20
tries to make students decode the sentences.
 After, teacher shows students different kinds of social
network, students have to guess what are the social networks
real names, about their use, language and what are their 20
target-public.

Now, teacher asks students to make groups of three and give

to each group a piece of paper with some words in English
and others in Portuguese and they have to decode each word 15
and then, corrects the words using the board with students
help.

After this, teacher gives more two words to each group one
written in English and other in Portuguese and so, students
have to create their own code in order to make the other 15
groups to guess their meaning.

How the Internet is Changing Language

Use of digital devices and the many opportunities for communication occasioned by the
internet have required language to jump through many different hoops. Now that people are
communicating in written form as never before, truncated turns of phrase and space- or
keystroke-efficient emoticons and acronyms have become mainstream.
Facebook has given a different nuance to familiar words such as status, post and tag. Its
perhaps right that Facebook should be one of the most influential sites: according to the
Huffington Post, if Facebook were a country, it would be the most populated in the world.
English continues to dominate the web; the amount of English language content far
outweighs the number of mother tongue speakers in the world.
The fact that language is humanitys greatest tool may strengthen majority languages to
the cost of minority ones, threatening the worlds linguistic diversity. Thats perhaps the
greatest change that the internet poses to language across the globe.
