Abstract
Finiteelementanalysishasbeenwidelyusedinthefieldoffootandfootwearbiomechanicstodetermineplantarpressuresaswellasstresses
andstrainswithinsofttissueandfootwearmaterials.Whendealingwithanatomicalstructuressuchasthefoot,hexahedralmeshgeneration
accountsformostofthemodeldevelopmenttimeduetogeometriccomplexitiesimposedbybranchingandembeddedstructures.Tetrahedral
meshing,whichcanbemoreeasilyautomated,hasbeentheapproachofchoicetodateinfootandfootwearbiomechanics.Hereweusethe
nonlinearfiniteelementprogramAbaqus(Simulia,Providence,RI)toexaminetheadvantagesanddisadvantagesoftetrahedraland
hexahedralelementsundercompressionandshearloading,materialincompressibility,andfrictionalcontactconditions,whicharecommonly
seeninfootandfootwearbiomechanics.Thisstudydemonstratedthatforarangeofsimulationconditions,hybridhexahedralelements
(AbaqusC3D8H)consistentlyperformedwellwhilehybridlineartetrahedralelements(AbaqusC3D4H)performedpoorly.Ontheotherhand,
enhancedquadratictetrahedralelementswithimprovedstressvisualization(AbaqusC3D10I)performedaswellasthehybridhexahedral
elementsintermsofcontactpressureandcontactshearstresspredictions.Althoughtheenhancedquadratictetrahedralelementsimulations
werecomputationallyexpensivecomparedtohexahedralelementsimulationsinbothbarefootandfootwearconditions,theenhanced
quadratictetrahedralelementformulationseemstobeverypromisingforfootandfootwearapplicationsasaresultofdecreasedlaborand
expeditedmodeldevelopment,allrelatedtofacilitatedmeshgeneration.
