"In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is."
Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play.

Nayeem: The debates on theory vs practice will go on

For this reason, the organizers of todays event, we the Voice of Business could not find a better
theme than this How to Become a new generation Banking Wizard: Theory vs. Practice.

Bushra: So on behalf of the Voice of Business I am Fatema Tuz Johoora and Im Nayeem Alam,
we welcome you all to the 2nd day of the Voice of Business week 2014.

Introducing the panel:

Nayeem: Ladies and gentleman, today have a very special panel with experts from the field of
both theory and practice. It is a privilege to present the game changer of the banking industry and
a visionary corporate leader Mr. Rumee Ali.

Mr. Muhammad A. (Rumee) Ali served at different levels in local and


international banking sector. Prior to joining in BRAC, he served as the
Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank. With his appointment as Country
Head and General Manager of Grindlays Bangladesh, Rumee Ali became the
first Bangladeshi to head a major international bank in Bangladesh. In July
2000, following the takeover of ANZ Grindlays by Standard Chartered
Bank, Rumee Ali was appointed the CEO of the Standard Chartered Group
in Bangladesh, heading both Standard Chartered Bank and Standard
Chartered Grindlays Bank.
Bushra:
He is the Advisor to the Executive Director of BRAC. Director of the board
of the Brac Bank and Bracnet Ltd He is also the chairman of bKash Limited,
BRAC Sajaan Exchange Ltd, BRAC EPL Investments Ltd, BRAC EPL
Stockbrokerage Ltd and BRAC IT Services Ltd. He was the Managing
Director of Brac Enterprises & Investments.
He is a member of the boards of several organizations including Global
Alliance of Banking on Values, Performance Based Grants Initiative,
International Finance Corporation, Bangladesh Investment Climate Fund,
Financial Inclusion CEOs Forum, International Finance Corporation.

Nayeem:

His banking experience includes in India, United Kingdom and Australia.


Mr. Ali was elected a Fellow of the Bangladesh Institute of Bankers in 2001.
He received a number of awards including C. R. Das Research Council Gold
Medal for Banker of the year 1995, Atish Dipanker Award for Banking -
2000,CEO of the Year -2000 by Junior Chamber International, Bangladesh
and Sorojini Naidu Award for Banking 2009
Mr. Ali received his B.A. (Honours) and M.A. in Economics from Dhaka
University.

country.
Addressing Mr. Mirza Mahmud Rafiqur Rahman

Bushra:

Today we are also very lucky to have Mr. Mirza Mahmud Rafiqur Rahman who an expert
has played a leadership role in the banking industry. He is the Additional Managing
Director & Company Secretary of the United Commercial Bank Limited.
Mr. Mirza Mahmud Rafiqur Rahman started his Banking Career in 1988. In his long 26
years of Banking Career, he has held many responsible management positions in
Corporate Affairs, Business Development, Human Resources, Public Relations and
Company Secretariat etc. in reputed Banks like UCB, The City Bank Ltd. and many other
esteemed organizations. His insight, aesthetic sense and visionary leadership combined
with profound knowledge led to continuous growth in every organization he worked for.

Addressing the moderator Nazmul Hasan Palash:

Nayeem: Last but not the least we are very delighted to have our very own faculty member Mr
Namul Hasan Palsh as a moderator of this session who an expert from the theoretical field of
banking. He has joined as lecturer of department of banking, University of Dhaka in 2012.
Before that he was a faculty member of Daffodil international University.

We are really delighted to have you today. A big hand for the pride of Banking Department

Bushra: Now, I would like to request our president of the voice of business to take the guests to
