Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet.

The author does not reveal the cause of the enmity between two noble

families at the beginning of the story. The enmity still continued, although the

original cause of the quarrel had been long forgotten. There are several causes

of action indicated by the antagonist character as follows:

1. Act I, Scene i

65
{ Enter ABRAHAM and BALTHASAR }

ABRAHAM : Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?{1.1}

it to part these men with me.{1.17}

TYBALT : what, drawn, and talk of peace! I hate the word, as I

hate hell, all Montague, and thee: Have at thee, coward!{1.18}

{ They Fight }

Tybalt came and see the fighting of two servants of two noble families. He

saw Benvolio who tries to separate them {two servants}. Tybalt and Benvolio

are debating. Benvolio still keep to do not fight. But, Tybalt has violent

Now, by the stock and honour of my kin,

To strike him dead, I hold it not a sin.{1.22}

67
TYBALT : It fits, when such a villain is a guest:

No better term than this,-thou art a villain.{1.35}

MERCUTIO : O calm, dishonourable, vile submission!

Alla stoccata carries it away.{1.39}

68
{DRAWS}

Mercutio was very angry and did not receive if Tybalt calls Romeo as

his man. It means the same as degrading as a figure of Romeo (Montague).

Tybalt has been regarded as a villain Romeo. Tybalt says that Romeo is a

villain who has hurt Capulet, but Romeo denied by saying that he does not

hurt anyone and loves him (Tybalt) and Capulet. And finally Mercutio feels

TYBALT : Thou, wretched boy, that didst consort him here,

Shalt with him hence.{1.48}

{THEY FIGHT; TYBALT FALLS}

Actually, Romeo did not want to fight with Tybalt who is a nephew of

his wife, Juliet. Because he saw his friends death for the actions of Tybalt,

Romeo and Tybalt are on fighting, and finally, Tybalt falls (died).

4.1.3 The Negative Effects of Personal Revenge as Reflect by Antagonist

Character in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet.

There are some negative effects of personal revenge as reflected by

antagonist character in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet :

1. Personal revenge between two noble families (Montague and Capulet)

causes the existence of a fight between servants of Montague and

servants of Capulet on the streets. Its always happen when servant

of Montague meet servant of Capulet.

Act 1, Scene I Verona. A Public Place.

GREGORY{2.1} : Do you quarrel, Sir?

ABRAHAM{2.2} : Quarrel sir! No, sir.

2. Fighting between two servants houses causes Lord and Lady both of

them came and fighting each other. There are so crowded and the

fighting is very disturbing peace of Verona until the Prince came to

separate them.

Mercutio feels that Romeos utterances is dishonourable, Mercutio got

angry. Mercutio and Tybalt are on fighting till Mercutio falls (died).

much. They do not want Juliet falls in love with Romeo, so Lord and

Lady Capulet want Juliet to marry with Count Paris as soon as

possible. The families feud makes Juliet marry earlier.

Act III, Scene V. Capulets Orchard

LADY CAPULET{2.5} : Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn

The gallant, young and noble gentleman,

The County Paris, at Saint Peters church,

Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride

5. Personal revenge between two noble families (Montague and Capulet)

who lives around there makes them live in different places. Personal

revenge which has two families makes people live separately.

74
6. Hatred of two noble families is always overwhelming when they met

each other. They start on small talk, conversation till mock each other

which makes both of them got angry and they always draw their

sword to solve the problem. They cannot think positively and think

too fast with sword. Revenge makes the two families think that

sword can solve the problem. It makes fighting everywhere.

7. When two noble families on fighting, they fight and destroy anything

around them. It makes people scared of their fighting. Prince of

Verona feels annoyed and angry because of the families feud

(Capulet and Montague).

8. Lord and Lady of two noble families just think their revenge. They do

not think that revenge will makes what they have will be lost.

Revenge of two families make the next generations are lost

(Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Romeo and Juliet are dead).

9. Two noble families are not aware that victims are falls one by one,

including their son and their daughter. Revenge of two noble families

just makes sadness because of their son and daughters death.

Lady Capulet and Lord and Lady Montague) after the death of their

daughter and son.

2. Even though they have lost their son, daughter, nephew, and someone

they love, they care of each other now and forget the vengeance.

3. This is a life lesson that revenge does not solve the problems. Its just

leads to the new problem.

4. Two noble families aware that vengeance cannot solve with the

sword. Sword just makes many victims fall (died).

5. From dispute (especially personal revenge) between the two families,

they are be able to understand and control the ego or ambition of each

families are take care each other now.

76
4.1.5 The Effective of Personal Revenge as Reflected by Antagonist

Character in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet.

The story of Romeo and Juliet is a very interesting story to read. Some

effectiveness for readers as follows:

1. Readers understand that revenge is not a good thing and cause a lot

of cases. For example, there is a forbidden love which cause

secretly married earlier.

2. Readers know if we have vengeance with someone else, it must be

solved by good attitude and without debate on fighting.

3. Readers know that forgiveness is the best thing to end hostilities

and problems without victim such as personal revenge which not

solve the problem.

4. Readers can take the moral value that if someone has vengeance, it

must be solve in order to do not make a long time on vengeance

which rise bad consequence.

5. Readers know that personal revenge will only prolong the problem

and separates friendship.

6. Story of Romeo and Juliet, especially the cause of the problem

happened make readers know that personal revenge is not good to

keep for a long time.

77
4.2 Discussion

From all the quotations above, the researcher described personal revenge

as reflected by antagonist character in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet into five

statements of the problems. All the characters are almost antagonist character and

protagonist character can be antagonist character because of personal revenge, for

example Romeo who becomes antagonist character because of his best friends

death. If a servant of Montague met a Capulet servant in the street, a fight would

almost certainly result and the fight would soon take on the proportions of a battle

as one person after another arrived on the scene. Balthasar is Romeos servant and

Abraham is servant to Montague, while Sampson and Gregory are servants to

Capulet. From the dialogue above, Sampson showed his hatred to Montague by

doing bite his thumb. Sampson did it expressly. It means that Sampson challenges

Abraham to fight. Sampson said that if the law of his side, if he said yes (really

bite his thumb at Abraham and Balthasar, Montague). Sampson still does not want

to say yes (bite his thumb at them). Gregory started his conversation by offering

quarrel which incisively the condition. Abraham does not want to fight them

(Capulet), but Sampson challenges Abraham that he serve as good a man as you.

Abraham does not believe that Sampson is good to fight and Finally they fight

each other to defend their own families.

Lord and Lady of two noble families came and fighting each other till

Prince Escalus came to separate them and said that if their vengeance (and

fighting) is disturbing the peace of Verona. There is a feast in a hall of Capulet and

Romeo with his best friend came to the feast. Romeo met Juliet and Tybalt saw

78
that Romeo came into the Capulets Hall. Tybalt is nephew of Lady Capulet who

has bad temper fiery when see Romeo. Tybalt wants kill Romeo, but he is on

fighting with Mercutio. In a public place, Tybalt with his servants come to fight

Romeo because last night in the feast, Romeo approached Juliet. But, Tybalt just

see Mercutio and debating. And then, Romeo came. Tybalt said that Romeo is his

man. Mercutio was very angry and did not receive if Tybalt calls Romeo like that.

It means that Romeo is trifling. Tybalt starts his talking to fight Romeo. Tybalt

said that Romeo is such a villain. But Romeo do protest that he never injuries

anyone (Capulet) and Romeo said that he love Tybalt and Capulet. Mercutio heard

that Romeo love Capulet (including Tybalt), Mercutio does not accept and feel his

pride in trampling. And then, Mercutio draws his sword which shows ready to

fight.

In the first battle, Mercutio was dead because of good intention of Romeo

to separate them. Romeo saw his friends death for the actions of Tybalt, Romeos

temper is overwhelming and full of ambition to fight Tybalt. Although, he does

not want to fight Tybalt before. Tybalt thinks that Mercutio asks him to come to

Tybalt with mocking tone. Romeo avenges the death of his friend where lives are

to be paid with their lives. He does not care who will be die on fighting. Whoever

is he, he must die (Romeo or Tybalt, or both of them) Tybalt and Romeo are on

fighting and Tybalt falls {died}.Romeo avenge Mercutio by killing Tybalt and

Tybalt died. Lord and Lady Montague knew that Mercutio died, they were hate

Capulet very much and Lord and Lady Capulet knew that Tybalt died, they were

hate Romeo very much. Revenge between two noble families more fiery and Lord

and Lady Capulet wants their daughter marry with County Paris, but Juliet does

79
not love Paris and she love Romeo. Juliet is forced to marry Count Paris by Lady

Capulet (and Lord Capulet) and Juliet does not want to marry with Count Paris.

Lord Capulet (Father) forces Juliet to marry Paris. If Juliet wants marry, she wants

marry with Romeo who hate of Lord and Lady Capulet. Lord Capulet said that

Juliet is not proud of his choice (marry with Count Paris). Lord Capulet thinks

that Count Paris is a good man and smart. Lord Capulets temper is overwhelming

and Juliet has to come to the church on her wedding with Count Paris. Lord

Capulet will drag Juliet to come to the church if needed. Paris came to the tomb

and he met Romeo who will meet Juliet in the tomb. Paris is not happy to see

Romeo go to the Capulets tomb because Romeo took the life of Tybalt and Juliet.

Paris considers will act maliciously he challenges Romeo to fight and must to die.

Romeo does not want to fight, but Paris think vengeance be pursued further than

death, so he wants to kill Romeo and they fight.

Because of their forbidden love, their love ended in death. Analyzing

Personal revenge as reflected by antagonist character in Shakespeares Romeo and

Juliet, the researcher got the result of five statements of the problem through

dialogue and through action.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his

career. The story was very interesting one because the story of Romeo and Juliet

different from other story. The main story of Romeo and Juliet was about the

enmity of two noble families, the Montague and the Capulet which exist

forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet and fighting (Montague and Capulet).

Hostilities which consequence personal revenge and fights between two noble

80
families, although the original cause had been long forgotten. There are many

fights occurred in the city street which disturb the peace Verona. The fighting

between two servants of two noble families, Lord and Lady capulet and Lord and

Lady Montague, Tybalt and Mercutio, Romeo and Tybalt, and Romeo with Count

Paris. Romeo and Juliets death is evidence of the two noble families feud

(including Mercutio, Tybalt, and Paris death) that their next generations are lost

because of their vengeance. Besides it, from this story the readers could take a

social value. Peace is beautiful and disastrous hostility. Peace is important in

human life to bring peace in the world.
