Summary

IwillbeinterningattheWorldAffairsCouncilontheCommunications/Developmentteamfor15hoursper
weekforthenextthreetosixmonths.Theprimaryfociofthispositionarecommunityengagement,
member/donorstewardship,andprogrammanagement.Withinthesecategorieswillbeawidearrayofdaily
tasks,suchascoordinatingwithinternsandothernonprofitstoscheduleworkshops,creatingregistrationlistsand
doingbackgroundresearchonregistrantspriortoevents,documentingeventsthroughphotosandblogposts,
maintainingcurrentrecords,andassistingwithcorrespondenceandpromotionalmaterials.Thepositionwillbe
basedaroundeventsandspecificprojects,withdaytodaytasksassignedasneeded.

TheWorldAffairsCounciliscenteredonthemissionoffosteringglobalcitizenshipwithinSeattlebyadvancing
understandingofinternationaleventsandculturethroughavarietyofcommunitybuildingandeducationbased
programsforstudents,professionalsandcuriousindividuals.InworkingwiththeWorldAffairsCouncilIwill
thusbeinvolvedincreatingthislocalglobalcommunity.Mypositionwillfocusonfacilitatingengagementwith
themembersoftheorganizationinordertomaximizetheeducationalandnetworkingbenefitsoftheeventsand
otherprogramsofferedbytheWAC.AsanunpaidinternshipwithalocalNGOfocusedoncommunity
engagement,thispositioncertainlyembodiestheServiceExperientialLearningarea.

6.Howandwhydidyouselectthisengagement?Whatskillsorexperiencesdoyouhopetogainfromit?

TheWorldAffairsCouncilhasbeenonmyradarforseveralyearsbecauseofthehighdegreeofcrossover
betweenitseventsandprogramsandthoseoftheJacksonSchool,mydepartment.Theorganization'sgoalof
fosteringagloballyconsciouscommunitywithinSeattlefitsperfectlywithmygoaltousetheremainderofmy
timeatUWtoestablishalocalnetworkofinternationallyengagedpeople;thus,WACwasmyfirststopinmy
searchforaspring/summerinternship.Inadditiontoconnectingwithpeopleandorganizationsengagedin
internationalwork,Ihopetousethisinternshiptodevelopskillsrelatingtothemanagementandfunctionofan
NGO,suchasconnectingwithmembers,maintainingrecords,andeventplanningandpromotion.

7.Howdoesthisactivityconnecttoyourconcurrentorpastcoursework?Howdoesitspeaktoyourbroader
educationgoalsandexperiences?
 InadditiontodirectcrossoverbetweentheJacksonSchoolandtheWorldAffairsCouncil,workingwiththe
WACofferstheopportunitytofurtherlearnaboutinternationalissuesandengagewithpeopledirectlyinvolved
inmyareasofinterest.IexpectthatinmypositionontheCommunications/Developmentteam,Iwillhavethe
opportunitytolearnaboutandestablishaconnectionwithmanyindividualsandorganizationsinvolvedin
internationaldevelopmentworkandothertypesofinternationalengagement.Ihopethat,byengagingwitha
widevarietyofpeopleandorganizations,Iwillbeabletodeepenandfocusmyowninterestsandtoestablish
connectionstouseinmypostUWendeavors.

8.Howwillyouractivitycontributetothelargergoalsoftheorganization/yourpartners?

MyroleintheWorldAffairsCouncilwillbeprimarilyrelatedtoeventsupport,member/donorrelationsand
programmanagement;assuch,myworkwillcontributetotheadministrativefunctionoftheorganization.While
theinternshipisstructuredaroundeventsandprojects,mydaytodaytaskswillconsistofwhatisneededatthat
momentinanyofthemultipledomainsthatfallunderCommunications/Development.Assistinginmaintaining
memberrecords,inpreparingforevents,andinmanagingthepublicimageoftheWAC,myrolewillhelpthe
organizationdevelopacommunitywithwhichtospreadinternationalawareness.
