(9) Organisms and environments. The student knows that plants and animals have basic needs
and depend on the living and nonliving things around them for survival. The student is expected
to:

(A) differentiate between living and nonliving things based upon whether they have
basic needs and produce offspring; and

(B) examine evidence that living organisms have basic needs such as food, water, and
shelter for animals and air, water, nutrients, sunlight, and space for plants.

(10) Organisms and environments. The student knows that organisms resemble their parents and
have structures and processes that help them survive within their environments. The student is
expected to:

(A) sort plants and animals into groups based on physical characteristics such as color,
size, body covering, or leaf shape;

(B) identify parts of plants such as roots, stem, and leaves and parts of animals such as
head, eyes, and limbs;

(C) identify ways that young plants resemble the parent plant; and

(D) observe changes that are part of a simple life cycle of a plant: seed, seedling, plant,
flower, and fruit.

General Classroom Individual One week- 30 minutes a day

Opening Transition: Read the Eric Carle book, The Tiny Seed or the book If you Plant a
Seed by Kadir Nelson. (Each day we can read a different book).

Closing Transition: Sing Song: The children plant the seed, The children plants the
seeds, Hi-Ho the cherry-O, The children plants the seeds. The sun begins to shine, The
rain begins to fall, The plants begin to grow, The flowers smile at us, (repeat Chorus)

Open-ended Questions, to be used before (B), during (D), and/or after (A) the activity
itself:

1. (B) What kind of seeds can you buy at a store to grow?


2. (D) Where else do you see soil other than from the bag or planting pot?
3. (A) What other living things need water to grow?

Procedure: (Set-up before, how the teacher will introduce, what the children will do,
how the activity will end)

1. Set up small groups where 2-3 students can be at each table. Put a paper plate,
scoop, soil, seed, spray bottle on the table for each student. Also have the
worksheets ready for the children.
2. Have all the children gather to read the books over planting seeds
3. Everyone should get in groups of two or three(If you need to assign the children
to certain tables, that is fine).
4. First go over the activity that they will be doing and the rules and steps.
5. Ask Opening Question: What kinds of seeds can you buy at the store to grow?
6. Go through the steps with the children. First they will need to get a marker and
put their name on the pot. Second, put the pot on the paper plate.
7. Next take the bag of soil to each table and have the children scoop the soil into
their pot. Once all pots are full, we will go over planting the seed.
8. Show the children the proper way of how to put a seed in the soil. Take your
pointer finger and make a small indention in the soil and set the seed in it.
9. Next take some of the soil and cover the seed.
10. Ask During Question: Where else do you see soil other than from the bag or
your planting pot? Explain to children that the dirt outside is Soil.
11. We will last have the children take their spray bottles and spray their plant
thoroughly.
12. Next we will begin to introduce the Vocabulary words. Explain what it means
when a plant begins to Sprout, the different places that you can get Soil and
why it is good for the plant and last Watering and what it does for the plant.
13. Have children take worksheet and draw what their plant looks like on the first
day.
14. Give them an opportunity to ask questions.
15. Have a spot ready by the window and have each kid bring their plants to the
window.
16. Have all kids clean up the materials and put them in the assigned buckets.
17. Ask after question: What other living things need water to grow?
18. Sing closing transition as each kid finishes cleaning up and goes back to their
assigned desks.
