ECD 243: Observation Reflective Analysis
Schedule and Planning
During our first class time observation, I did not notice
much of a change in Nicholes schedule from our full day
observation. For our full day observation, we had to meet
as a class first, so I did not get to Nicholes class until 8:00
AM. I noticed this time that the children in my ST
classroom meet in Mynesias room until 8 AM when they
go back to the regular classroom. I believe Latonya and I
have decided that we will continue doing that during our
student teaching week, because that is a normal routine
for the children and their families. We have read in Ages
and Stages how important it is for children to know what
to expect, so I believe its in everyones best interest that
we continue meeting in Mynesias room. Contrary to our
last visit, Nichole could do a small group activity with the
children. It was more of a craft, which is frowned upon
according to Powerful Interactions, but it was still
resourceful for us to observe how each child reacted in a
more intimate setting.
Literacy Learning and Materials
Nichole used circle time again as her opportunity to read
to the children. Since February is National Childrens
Dental Health month, she added about ten new books
with related topics to the library. I think its a great idea to
continually add new books to the childrens selection,
because its our job to keep them excited and engaged in
literacy. ECD 131 and The Intentional Teacher has
equipped us with plenty of strategies for doing so, and
that happens to be one of them. Her story time choice

Teacher-Child Interactions
Very early into our day, Nichole fussed at Tabby for
hanging all over me. She explained that I was not there
to be her friend, but I was another teacher. (Id like to be
their friend and teacher!) I think it was necessary to
address, but perhaps not in such a shaming way. Tabby
seemed pretty upset momentarily, but quickly forgot
about the incident. Other than this, all the teacher-child
interactions I observed were positive ones. Nichole gave
plenty of affirmations during small group, which ECD 105
and Powerful Interactions acknowledge, and a few good
jobs.
Assessment
I gathered a bit more information about the childrens
alphabet knowledge, fine motor skills, and writing skills
from observing Nicholes small group activity. All the
children could successfully use a glue stick and paste
their pre-cut paper tooth onto construction paper. London
and Dylan were the only two who put the glue on the
back of the tooth, though. All the other children smeared
glue all over the construction paper, and then stuck their
tooth in the middle. Once they completed brushing
was also related to dentists, and she informed us Logans
mom (who works in a dentist office) would be visiting on
Wednesday to speak to the class. These are all great for
supporting childrens literacy skills.
Teamwork
Of course, Nichole has no assistant teacher in her
classroom, but her and Mynesia communicate often
throughout the day. As I mentioned, Mynesia watches our
class in her room until 8 AM when Nichole usually arrives.
Nichole is also relieved a couple times during the morning
for restroom breaks, thanks to Constantino and Todd. It
seems everyone who works at CDM are friendly and
professional with each other, which we learned the
importance of in ECD 201.
Plans/Materials for Next Visit
Share our completed learning center plan with
Nichole, and discuss how we plan to set everything
up.

their names in the bottom corner. London did not need
assistance, Dylan didnt need any help, Sofia needed to
trace her name, Deon could write his without help, Tabby
traced, and Logan traced.
All six of the children present during our observation
displayed age-appropriate gross motor skills during
outside play, interacted well with each other throughout
the morning, and displayed conscious discipline reactions
a handful of times.
Successes and Revelations, Questions and
Confusions
Revelation:
Sylvia is in Thailand until the end of March. She will
not be here during our student teaching week.
The children can get up from the table, when
theyve finished snack, to play in a center of their
choice.
I noticed a small section in the classroom identified
as the music center, which I had overlooked during
our first visit.
