When and How do we Teach Close Reading?
When- During any type of reading activity. (Read aloud, book clubs,
small group guided reading etc.)

How- First you model by demonstrating close reading when you read
aloud to your students. There are several components

Groups Investigate 2+ strategies each- Share whole group

Close Reading Style-

How did the Author use description to help the reader

understand how Maya felt?
Activity
Each group is designated 1 short book to read as a group

Upon reading the story, group members will work together to choose a standard to focus on:

Conventions of language

Word meaning

Word relationships/nuances

Domain specific word meaning

Identifying central ideas or themes

After choosing a standard to work with, the group will work together to write 3
traditional comprehension questions, and three close reading comprehension questions.

After composing their questions, we will hold large group sharing/discussion. (What did you
like about this activity? Was it helpful and how so? )

become more engaged? Specifically how could this assist
ELLs?

-Are there any negatives to this method of doing close
