Proclamations
Welcome to the second issue of Oldhammer in the New World Zine. In this issue we went for
Oldhammer in the
New World Zine a Rogue Trader theme to give more of a spotlight to the Science Fiction side of the hobby.
Within these pages you will find a mix of old and new as people pour life into their Space
Vol. 1 - Issue 2 Opera games.

2016 was a great year for Oldhammer, but I want to challenge each and every one of you
Oldhammer in the make 2017 even better. Painting, terrain building and blogging are all excellent things in and
New World Created of themselves but we as individuals need to get out and play games. If you cant make it to an
by Oldhammer event, make your own. Going to a convention or tournament? Try to make it
Blake Shrode Oldhammer in some way. Bring your old copy of Blood Bowl or Man OWar, sneak a unit of
pre slotta citadel into your army list and then tell the world that you are Oldhammer.

Reviews, Ads, Services
The sole focus of this zine is the free exchange of ideas, projects battle reports to inspire each
other in the hobby. While the authors may describe the use of a product, it is not meant as a
review or an ad, but just a relaying of information. Many members of The New World may
have shops, items or services that they sell, but it is not the intent to promote them as
anything other than fellow hobbyists. Lastly, while some of the submissions are from people
who happen to be professional artists, it is not a requirement to submit an article or photo of
your work. Do not be intimidated. The whole point of this thing is to share what you do with
others.
I hope you enjoy this issue.

Subterfuge in the 41st Millennium
So those of you who also follow Give'em Lead know that BlueinVT and I just spent a weekend in AirborneGrove26's
basement in the US Midwest playing wargames and generally devolving into teenage boys. So the four day basement fest
included games of 3rd edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Rogue Trader, Heroquest, and other assorted nonsense. One
thing I had really been looking forward to was trying out some house rules that had been bouncing around in my head for a
few months and I think the results were just super fantastic. I call the rules "Rogue Ops"

Mercenaries tactically doing tactical shit

The Fundamentals
The concept of Rogue Ops is basically a mashup between Rogue Trader and Osprey's "Black Ops" rules, with a little
smattering of Space Hulk thrown in for good measure. The end result is something like playing X-Com, but with a much
faster pace than the classic thriller. Basically I took what I thought was great about Rogue Trader, shook up the turn phases
and added a few tactical elements to liven up the tabletop.

I created two forces of roughly fifteen figures per player. Each player had two to three hero models, a heavy weapon trooper,
a special weapon trooper, and about ten regular grunts or "Drongos" as they say on the death-continent of Australia. It was
important to confine the forces to four troop types to accommodate card-based random activation.

Oldhammer in the Volume 1 Issue 2

New World
4 1st Qtr 2017
Card-based Activation
Borrowing from Black Ops and probably dozens of other historical games, the standard Warhammer turn was swapped out
for playing card based random activation. I took a standard playing card deck and removed all the face cards, the Aces, and
jokers. One player's troops would be activated by red cards and the other by the black cards. Aces activate heros, Jacks
activate troops, Kings
activate heavy
weapons, and Queens
activate special
weapons (plasma
guns, flamers, etc).

One turn is complete

once all cards in the
deck have been drawn
and all models have
had a chance to
activate. Once all the
cards have been
played the deck is
reshuffled and a new
turn begins.

Actions Alright guys, lets sneak up on these bloody drongos.... sneakily

Once a troop type card
has been drawn, all
units of that type may
take two actions in
any order the
controlling player
wishes. The actions
available are move,
fire, use psychic Alright guys, lets sneak up on these bloody drongos.... sneakily
Oldhammer in the Volume 1 Issue 2
New World
5 1st Qtr 2017
power, charge, fight hand-to-hand, go on overwatch, or use suppressing fire. Most of the actions are familiar to Warhammer
players; I simply use turn phases as actions. Players and can fire twice per activation, or move twice, or move and fire, move
and use psychic powers, etc. Overwatch is also a familiar mechanic which allows models to fire out of the turn sequence.
The only caveat about overwatch is that once a model enters overwatch, it may not take a second action.

Suppressing fire is a game mechanic used in Black Ops which allows models the opportunity to pin enemy models in place
by delivering a heavy volume of fire and forcing the enemy to choose between either risking taking damage or forfeiting
their activation by taking cover. Models fire twice and add suppression tokens to the target unit or location on the board and
any units choosing to face the fire must take a number of hits equal to the number of suppression tokens on the unit or area.

Random activation and the addition of overwatch and suppression really adds a great tactical feel to the game.

The Stealth Game

Black Ops really shines when it gets down to the stealth rules. Having played a few games of Black Ops I felt that the stealth
game was a little boring for the defender in the scenario so I slightly modified some of the elements to speed up the game
and ultimately make it more interesting. My biggest gripe about the stealth game is that if you play it right out of the book,
a savvy attacker pretty much play the rules to the point where the defender never gets the chance to activate their troops.
The stealth game includes an A.I. system for sentries that makes a lot of sense and keeps the attacker on their toes. I had to
modify the "observation" test to make it more likely for sentries to spot attackers. If you've played Black Ops at all you may
have experienced situations that really challenge the suspension of disbelief, such as an attacking model walking right in

SNEAKINS!!
Oldhammer in the Volume 1 Issue 2
New World
6 1st Qtr 2017
front of a sentry in the middle of a street moving undetected because the unmodified observation roll is too difficult.

Some of the modifications I made included making noise counters persist throughout the entire game instead of refreshing
every turn, allowing sentries to modify their observation rolls with nearby noise counters. The more noise the attackers
made, the easier it becomes for the sentries to detect the attackers.

Blinds and Hidden Movement

I incorporated Space Hulk style blip tokens and "blinds" to conceal units and objectves. In one game the attackers had to
retrieve some loot from the defender. The defender was given five cards and only one represented the objective. The attacker
would have to move into base contact with a card in order to reveal whether or not it was the objective. Hidden troops could
be revealed by passing intelligence tests (GOTTA USE THAT RT STATLINE, GMS!)

Putting It All Together

So how did it all work together on the tabletop? Pretty well! I was able to preserve the mechanics of Warhammer. I didn't
change the statlines or mess with the combat system. Shaking up the turns made the game much more interesting and added
a deeper level of engagement. The stealth system worked well, but required a lot of involvement from the game master. The
problem lies in how the streamlined Black Ops system interacts with the clunky Rogue Trader rules. I can probably refine
the rules a bit more. Using the stealth system really allows the game master to incorporate more role-playing into the game,
which I love.

Firefights were absolutely BRUTAL. The volume of firepower that can be delivered is just staggering. If you don't use cover
and don't take advantage of overwatch your poor drongos will get shredded. I don't even want to think about what a
following fire weapon can do using two actions and the suppressing fire or overwatch rule.

What I really like about these house rules is that I'm not sacrificing any of the complexity of Rogue Trader while also taking
advantage of a more streamlined turn order.

I'll have chance to play a few more scenarios over the Thanksgiving holiday and look forward to getting input from more
of my New World compatriots.

Thanks Bulldog, What a great way to spice up the Rogue Trader rule set. You can find this article on his blog

Who is..?
The Nefarious Space Pirate and Rogue Trader is
mentioned no less than (#) times throughout the
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader rule book. He
seems to constantly be swindling his partners and

Abdul Goldberg
frequently coming up with new ships and crews as
he cons his way across the Imperium.
Here is a selection of Abduls created by fellow
New Worlders.

Frederick J. Rose "Abdul Goldberg?!"

Yes. He's real, but he
is neither a 'pansexual terrorist' nor a 'dandy highwayman',
Actually, I take that back. He's both. Impersonate an Imperial
officer? Easy. Steal a starship? With aplomb! Double cross
the Phalangite Cartel? More than once! Goldberg has a 'dead
or alive' bounty on his head in 12 star systems and his
romantic conquests are innumerable, but at least its said that
he's kind to horses and never stole from widows or orphans.
The figure is a Citadel fighter "dogs of war" range circa '85.
Got rid of Garth's axe. Found a white metal las-pistol in an
Eldar job lot I bought recently. Tacked on a couple of SM
grenades and a plastic servo skull.

Sean squires Abdul Goldberg! The name

conjures up fear and loathing.
No one knows the true origin of
this Rogue Trader, he has been seen in many systems, never
with the same
crew. There
are many
stories about
Abdul, this is
one.

Before arriving at the fringe of the Empire, Abdul was a very

zealous inquisitor. He enforced the Emperor's will with a
vengeance but carried a dark secret, he was a psyker. At first he
was able to hide his budding power. His power was revealed as
he unleashed powerful wind blasts against the heretics who had
killed his beloved acolyte, Brother Yorick. Abdul now travels
with his loyal companion forever at his side as a servo skull.

Although Abdul is equipped with a full compliment of weapons,

he is most often seen with his trusty bolt pistol Fatima and his
Chain Sword Te Absolvo.

The majority of the figure is Eureka's Voltaire figure. I'm more

of a Rousseau guy, but I don't think anyone makes a figure for
him. The weapons and servo skull are from the Cadian trooper
boxed set, as well as the respirator mask. The backpack and extra
tube for the respirator are from Dragon Forge.

Thomas Grove
Here is my version of Abdul Goldberg. Nefarious space
ruffian and your hero's nemesis. Or at least that friend
who always seems to get you in trouble. I had several
ideas for my figure. First was going to be a heavily
converted rogue trader mini. Looking through my lead
pile that seemed a bust from the get go. Then I thought
maybe a wrestler and was thinking of using Hasselfree's
torturer to fit the bill. The true inspiration struck and I
decided to go with the King! So here he is folks Abdul
Goldberg the Ayatollah of Rocknrolla! A flashy gangster
who fancies himself a bit of a rockstar. His profession lets
him get into places very easily. However the drinking and
drugs can get him into some very sticky scenarios.
The yellow is becoming one of my new favorite recipes.
It is Foundry's Ochre triad, in four layers. I go shade, then
wash it with GW Fuegan Orange, then shade again, then
the base and highlight.
I also used Foundry's Near Eastern flesh triad for his skin.

Chris Lopez
The keen-eyed among you will have already identified the torso and head as that of a Marauder Dark Elf scout.
I clipped and filed down the repeater crossbow and clipped the ponytail to give ol' Abdul a sleek and shiny
dome. The legs came from a random old west figure I
had laying around. I savagely sawed the two models in
half to make one, single, far superior model.
ABDUL GOLDBERG IN ALL HIS EASTER
FINERY!! Abdul is seen here sporting a mauve space
captain's jacket with pink Tallaran silk and white
embroidered coat fasteners. Underneath his captain's
jacket can be seen a stylish mesh armored shirt, most
likely of Eldar origin. A smart plum sash ties together
the royal purple slacks with the rest of the outfit. The
royal purple slacks not only compliment Abdul's leather
and gold sword scabbard, but also delightfully frame a
set of shapely thighs and buttocks! A stylized skull on
the back of the jacket says "I may be a pirate, but at least
I have style!"
The slacks may whisper "style", but the bloodstripes
scream "WARRIOR". That's right, the bloodstripes warn
any ne'er-do-wells that Abdul is not one with whom
who is be trifled with all your ratchet bull. And of
course, no self-respecting pirate in the 41st millenium
would be caught anywhere without the ubiquitous
imperial model las pistol.

No conversion needed for me. This model has
ALWAYS been Abdul Goldberg. The bare chest, furry
pimp vest, gold chains, spiky flat top... it all screams
scumbag! Perfect for a smarmy, backstabbing criminal.
Pirate Captain (1988: 400522, 1991: Adventurers
Powersword & laspistol 072518/27)
From the Collecting Citadel Miniatures Wiki.

Nathan heazlett
The body comes from a Reaper Bones figure (Barnabus
Frost 77132).
I replaced his bendy and kind of crappy sword with one
from Mantic skeleton kit.
The servo-skull is basically unmodified, it's just glued on
to his shoulder. I added an extra cable made from guitar
string for a little more strength in the connection with his
shoulder. It's like a parrot on his shoulder.
His pistol is an oldschool plasma gun with guitar string. He
also has some miscellaneous pouches and bits from 1/35
military figure kits and some kind of pouch from original
plastic Space Marines.

Rogue Trader Control Tower By Clarence harrison
Rogue Trader Control Tower Challenge
Nothing says Rogue Trader like dessert tub terrain. With all of the cool modern stuff out there is it crazy to
want a few buildings made from left over take out containers and drinking straws?

I'm going to basically build three buildings

like those to the left - my core containers
are shaped a little different, but the concept
will be the same. Tan towers, minimalist
detail, and a bit of weathering. No idea how
long this will take, but I'll post updates as I
go.

But why should I have all the fun? I'd like

to challenge all of the RT community to
come up with their own recycled terrain
project in September (or devote a post or
two to showing off stuff you already have -
I know you're out there because I've seen stuff on your blogs before). Feel free to incorporate stuff from your
bitz box to add details, but the main feature should be some plastic of styrofoam that started life as something
mortal before you made it awesome!

No there's no prize, but I'd love to see what you come up

with

Making a Start on the Tub Towers

Just a quick shot - construction is complete on my project
for the Rogue Trader Control Tower Challenge!
The effect is a little taller and more spindly than the old RT
inspiration, but these were the tubs I had on hand which was
the point of the exercise. These are going to very fast to
paint as 90% of the work will be several layers of spray
paint. I'll pick a few details in other colors and then use an
oil dot filter to 'grunge' them up a bit. You can't see it in the
photo, but I masked off windows at the top of the taller
towers with airbrush frisket. After the painting is finished,
I'll remove the masks and have completed windows. You
also can't see that I scored cracks and bullet holes in the
plastic, but hopefully the paint will show these things off.

Should be finished in a couple of days

Rogue Trader Control Towers
Well that WAS easy and I am well satisfied with the results!

The first coat of paint was dark hammered brass that also
contained a subtle texture. After that was dry, I sprayed the
towers with a yellow ochre from a 3/4 angle above which
left the undersides of details a bit darker for quick shadows.
Then I painted in a few details, mostly metallic bits and did
one drybrush highlight on the walls - I think it was Foundry
Sand 10B, but it will vary depending on the shade of your
base coat. I kept these as accents to a minimum as the
original buildings I am copying are pretty monotone.

Next up was an oil dot filter... if you're unfamiliar with this

technique it's basically what it sounds like. Apply oil paint -
in this case I used black, burnt umber, burnt sienna, ochre
(this one may seem redundant over this base, but it blends
with the other colors to add variety), blue, and white - in
small dots scattered across the model. Then use a clean
brush and apply mineral spirits to the model, drawing the
brush in vertical strokes to mimic runoff. There are lots of
tutorials online. You get some wonderful random effects and
it's hard to mess this up - if you get too much grime, just add
more mineral spirits and a sponge to remove it. The hardest
part about using this the first time is getting up the nerve to
randomly splatter you model with paint! Finally, I use black
weathering powder to accent all of the bullet holes.

That two tone look between sections in the photo above is

an illusion - the angled walls catch the light differently,
making some look darker
The windows are just the clear plastic. At first I thought this
would look cheesy, but the interior has enough shadow to
make the windows appear opaque and they reflect the
ambient light of the room for a very realistic appearance.
They also lack the texture of the walls and have a slight
recessed look to aid in the illusion they are a different
substance.

Something I forgot to do was highlight all of the cracks I

scored in the plastic. I could do it now, but they might look
strange on top of the weathering. Oh, well, one point of this
project was quick and dirty and they look great on the
tabletop
