This piece is good for helping students review and practice the fingers for the first five notes
of their concert Bflat scale. It will also help students with rests and will help them understand
how their part might work another part since there are call and response phrases as well
as parts where parts work in duets.
Many phrases include moving upwards and downwards stepwise motion from Do to Sol
and from Sol to Do.
Some possible complications include playing skips instead of steps. Another possible issue
is that students missing rests, which will be an important skill to teach younger students.
Allow students to correct mistakes themselves first and then correct them if necessary.
Rests can be reinforced by doing a "shh" motion whenever the students see a rest in their
part. This should be first added in when students are rehearsing fingering.
A good way for students to connect to the piece is by discussing which parts might sound
like which activity on the playground. The ideas that are shown in the piece are open
ended and students should be free to connect piece to other playground activities that
resonate with them. Discussing the connection from their favorite part of the day to
the piece will help students better understand and enjoy the piece and will also help
with musicality. Rehearsal would be an excellent time to teach dynamics and how to play
them to reflect the activities the piece represents.
