The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and University of the Philippines (UP) collaborated to build
the countrys rst integrated gold-copper mineral processing plant which does not use harmful chemicals.

DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Pea led on Friday (March 10) the inauguration and turnover of the UP-DOST
Integrated Gold-Copper Mineral Processing Plant to its plant-beneciary, the Benguet Federation of Small
Scale Miners (BFSSM) in Sitio Basil, Barangay Gumatdang, Itogon, Benguet.

De la Pea said the P25-million Integrated Gold-Copper Mineral Processing Plant is an eco-friendly plant as it
does not use the common chemicals used by large-scale mining plants in its extraction process.

It uses clean technology developed by UP Diliman researchers and whats more important is, walang mercury
and cyanide. The liquid euent is clean, clear water. The solid residues are now going through R&D (research
and development) as construction material, De la Pena told the Manila Bulletin on Saturday (March 11).

De la Pea said the technology uses an enhanced gravity concentration-otation-extraction process which
ensures that waste materials the plant will dispose are safe and non-pollutant.

Dr. Carlos Primo David, head of DOST- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology
Research and Development (PCIEERD) that co-developed the technology, said the integrated gold-copper plant
also has a built-in wastewater treatment system designed to recycle the water it uses in processing the
mineral ores.

The integrated plant, David added, can also yield higher percentage of gold extraction from the mineral ores,
arming their commitment to supportthe countrys small-scale industry.
