In this article we are going to provide the Mathematical
model to find the Mach number for the specified Area ratio at
the subsonic & supersonic region.
Case 1:

Determination of subsonic Mach number;

The Area Mach number relation is given by;

1 2 1

= 1+ (1)
+1 2

Where A is the Cross sectional area of the stream tube;

A* is the Throat cross sectional area;

M Mach number;

2 1

= 1+ (2)
+1 2

Let;

Then equation (2) becomes,

2 1

= 1+
+1 2

2 1 2

= +
+1 2 1

1 2

= +
+1 1

1 2

= +
1

2 1

= + (3)
+1 +1

Assume;

2 1
=
, = , =
+1 +1

Then Equation (3) becomes,

=( + ) (4)

( )= =( + ) (5)

( )= ( + ) (6)

+1 1
= =1
1 +1

2 1
+ = =1
+1 +1

After substituting the above values equation (6) becomes

( )=( + )

( )= =( + )

(0) =

(1) = ( + ) =1

The general quadratic equation is

( )= + + (7)

( ) = +2

(0) = =

(1) = +2 =1

(1) = + + =1

Substitute the values of b & c in terms of a in equation
(7), We get,

( )= + (1 2 ) + (8)

( )= = + (1 2 ) +

+ (1 2 ) + =0

(1 2 )
+ +1=0 (9)

The root value of the above equation provides the subsonic

Mach number in terms of squared value.

(1 2 ) (1 2 )
4
= = (10)
2
Finally the required subsonic Mach number

(1 2 ) (1 2 )
4
= (11)
2

Case 2:

Determination of supersonic Mach number;

We know that;

=( + )

Take;

1
=

Substitute the value of X in the above equation

We get;

= + (11)

=( + )

=( + ) (12)

Let we take,

= =

Then equation (12) becomes,

= ( + ) (13)

( )=( + ) (14)

( )= ( + ) (15)
1
We know that,

=1
1
Then,

( )=( + ) (16)

(0) =

(1) = ( + ) =1

(1) = ( + ) =1

The general quadratic equation is

( )= + + (17)

(0) = =

(1) = + + =1

(1) = +2 =1

( )= = + + (18)

CFD_AEROSPACE TECH_MIT_2017
Substitute the values of b & c in equation (18) in terms of
a we get,

= + (1 2 ) + (19)

+ (1 2 ) + =0

(1 2 )
+ +1 =0 (20)

The root value of the above equation provides the supersonic

Mach number in term of squared value.

(1 2 ) (1 2 )
+ 4
= = (21)
2
Finally the required supersonic Mach number

(1 2 ) (1 2 )
+ 4
= (22)
2
