Northside continues to evolve Same-sex
Student renters
and long-term
neighborhood
residents are
adjusting

The Northside neighborhood in
Chapel Hill is an unusual blend of
long-time residents and student
renters cycling in and out with the
school year. The community faces
problems as more student renters
move into the neighborhood.
The problems, of course, are
the skyrocketing costs of housing
throughout Chapel Hill, the chal-
lenge of competing with the student
rental market which is very difficult
and the press of a community that
is continuing to try and maintain
its diversity and affordability, said
Hudson Vaughan, senior director of
the Marian Cheek Jackson Center.
In hopes of alleviating some of
these issues, a partnership between
UNC, Durham-based community
developer Self-Help, the Jackson
Center and the town of Chapel Hill
created the Northside Neighborhood
Initiative, supported by a $3 million
loan from UNC.
The Northside Neighborhood
Initiative is a way to focus on how do
we balance the market and bend it
toward justice and how do we really
have a family-friendly community
that also has students and long-term
neighbors in engagement with one
another and in community with one
another, Vaughan said.
Kim Hoppin, who has lived in
Northside since 1992, said she has
seen changes in the neighborhood.

The UNC Greek community
came together Wednesday night to
raise awareness about sexual assault
through their event Its On Us.
The event was organized by Sigma
Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma and
partnered with Alpha Chi Omega
and Sigma Sigma Sigma. Money
raised will be donated to Orange
County Rape Crisis Center.
Andrew Clark, president of Sigma
Phi, said an estimated 300 people
had gathered around the Old Well,
and over 20 organizations were rep-
resented.

tion and education, held workshops
after the event about engaging with
students through conversations
about sexual assault.
Junior Brian Vaughn, risk manag-
er of Sigma Phi, said the workshops
can help participants think about
how they can take action.
We can help students identify
situations in which sexual assault
may occur and empower them to
intervene in situations where consent
hasnt been given, he said.

Bible, challenged the
2015 SCOTUS ruling.

A bill filed Tuesday in the N.C.
General Assembly to ban same-
sex marriage will not advance
in the legislature, according
to a statement by N.C. House
Speaker Tim Moore.
There are strong constitu-
tional concerns with this legisla-
tion given that the U.S. Supreme
Court has firmly ruled on the
issue, therefore House Bill 780
will be referred to the House
Rules Committee and will not be
heard, the statement said.
The Uphold Historical
Marriage Act, or N.C. House
Bill 780, would have invalidated
marriages between people of the
same sex that did not take place
in the state.
The bill stated the U.S.
Supreme Courts Obergefell v.
Hodges decision was a consti-
tutional overreach and cited
biblical text to claim the Court
did not correctly interpret the
decree of God.
Some Republican House leg-
islators, including Rep. Chuck
McGrady, R-Henderson, criti-
cized the bill and the national
news coverage it received. In a
tweet Wednesday, McGrady said
what he called stupid bills are
often filed without the support
of most legislators mention-
ing a 2011 bill calling for North
Carolina to issue its own legal
currency backed by silver and
gold.
Any legislator can file a bill,
even a stupid one, the tweet
said. Remember what hap-
pened w/ the bill a few years ago
(to) create our own currency.
Ben Graumann, spokesper-
son for Equality NC, said the
organization sees the bill as the
next in a long line of attacks
against LGBTQ people in North
Carolina.
We just barely repealed HB2
and replaced it with an almost
as discriminatory law, and now a
bill like this is filed, Graumann
said. I think it shows very clear-
ly where some of the lawmakers
in Raleigh stand right now.
Shannon Minter, legal direc-
tor for the National Center for
Lesbian Rights, said he thought
the bill was a political stunt to
try to mobilize the bills spon-
sors base and to create more
polarization.
There are unfortunately
some state legislators who think
it is in their interest to try to
use any issue they can to divide
people more, he said.
Shannon Gilreath, a law pro-
fessor at Wake Forest University,
said he was not surprised by the
introduction of the bill to the
legislature.
There are a handful of
legislators who really have no
concept of what governing or
the Constitution means, and
they are constantly introduc-
ing these kinds of ridiculous
religion-based laws, which gen-

Junior Stefanie Clinton
didnt come to UNC with an
academic plan, but she knew
her extracurricular activities
would include theater.
Her love of theater dates
back many years ago
middle school, to be exact.
Through a youth theater
company and a supportive
hometown arts community,
her passion was born.
Ever since I first did it, I
couldnt stop, she said.
When Clinton first arrived
on campus, she looked for
things to join at FallFest. She
settled on Company Carolina,
a student-run theater com-
pany, and her first gig was as
a puppeteer for Little Shop
of Horrors.
Friends and connections
from that show helped her
naturally cross over to a theater
company more her style the
Pauper Players.

women, especially those por-

New club connects UNC collectors

The club aims to
display students
collections at UNC

On Tuesday, the Carolina Collectors
Collective received approval from the
University as an official club. First-year Do
said the organizations goal is to provide a net-
work for collectors of diverse interests to share
their passion for collecting.
The main purpose of the club is to serve
as a hub for collectors of all sorts of items to
gather and discuss the aspects of their specific
collections, Do said.
Do developed his desire to collect Nintendo
DS devices over winter break when he found an
old one from his childhood. When he returned
to school, he asked friends for their old DS
devices and started a collection but the device
wasnt the only thing he developed a passion for.
I came to realize that it wasnt just the
DSes that I liked it was kind of the act of
collecting that I enjoyed, Do said. Collecting
is a hobby that a lot of people are involved in

Body Politics 2017 focused on colorism

Baker and Joy Liburd, the
fourth annual Body Politics
event centered around broad-
casting messages of body
positivity and confronting
colorism.
Sponsored by the Carolina
Womens Center, the first half
of the program consisted of
a series of videos and per-
formances, including clips
of speeches by Malcolm X, a
performance by the a capella
group Harmonyx, dance per-
formances and spoken word
poetry.
Many of the pieces engaged
with the topic of colorism, the
way that racism applies in dif-
ferent ways to people of color
with varying skin tones.
One spoken word poem
was a group piece, The
Average Black Girl, that
chronicled the various preju-
dices and expectations black
girls face in American society.
First-year Reana Johnson,
one of the pieces per-
formers, said she believes
addressing colorism is
important and that colorism
is a heavily divisive factor in
black communities.
I think this is impor-
tant because its usually not
addressed, this divide within
our group is not addressed as
divisive as it is, Johnson said.
It reinforces white privilege,
white racial superiority and
its not addressed, so for the
community to realize that
this white privilege still exists
whether youre a little bit
higher with privilege than the
other black person, I think its
really important for that to
happen.
After the performances,
Liburd moderated a discus-
sion panel. She said she has
been involved in the Body
Politics program for four
years and has had her own
experiences with colorism.
In ninth grade, I had a
boyfriend that said I was
pretty for a darked skin girl.
I dont think it necessarily
impacted the way I felt about
myself, but I just thought it
was interesting because I had
never heard that before that
point, Liburd said. Then
you know, of course I ran
into other girls that had been
hearing that same thing.

Syria airstrikes met NC bill would punish sanctuary policies

with mixed reactions
Some think Trumps actions
might bring change to Syria.

After President Donald Trump launched
a missile strike on April 6 on a Syrian gov-
ernment airbase, there have been mixed
sentiments in the United States about the
strike and what might come next. Students
and faculty members at UNC have shared
those mixed sentiments.
For those of us studying the region, its
just another crummy event in a long series
of crummy events, Charles Kurzman, a
political sociology professor focused on
Muslim society and Middle Eastern studies,
said.
But for students with a tie to the conflict
in Syria, it was a pivotal moment one
they had been waiting on.
There was actually a wave of relief from
the Syrian-American diaspora. There was a
general thought that finally action is being
taken something finally is being done,
senior Savannah Wooten, who currently
serves as the student director for STAND,
said.
STAND, the Student-Led Movement to
End Mass Atrocities, is based in Washington,
D.C. and works to end genocides and mass
atrocities. Wooten said her organization has
been focusing intently on Syria.
Samia Daghestani, a Syrian-American
student, shared Wootens sentiment.
I must say that (for) the Syrian-American
activists here in the United States, it was
amazing that finally the United States was
standing for its principles and finally the
United States was telling the Assad regime
Thats enough, she said.
Daghestanis parents were both born in
Syria, but left as the opposition was begin-
ning. She said her parents have continued
to support the opposition from the United
States, and she has followed the revolution
closely, even watching as violent acts have
happened in her mothers hometown.
In a statement by U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis,
R-N.C., Tillis called Bashar al-Assad a war
criminal.
President Trump decisively responded to
Assads latest atrocity to help prevent future
ones, sending a clear message that when the
Syrian regime crosses the red line, America
will respond, Tillis said in the statement.
Daghestani said as a Syrian-American,
she was not upset by Trumps airstrikes like
so many Americans were, because she said
they were necessary.
I think people were confused because
there were so many negative actions that
Donald Trump has taken since he has taken
office, so we automatically assume this is
a bad thing, she said. But the fact of the
matter is this is something that the Syrian
people and the Syrian-American activists in
the U.S. have been asking of their president
for years now.
Now the question for activists like
Daghestani and Wooten is what will come
next and if more will be done.
For us, on one hand, it is relieving to
see that action is being taken, Wooten
said. But at the same time, we wonder
two things: if this is either a one-and-done
strike that wont be followed up on and pro-
vides false hope to Syrians, or if it may lead
to military intensification or disproportion-
ate escalation.

The N.C. Senate Judiciary
Committee cleared a bill that
would punish municipalities
with sanctuary city policies and
compel universities in the UNC
system to disclose students
immigration status to law
enforcement.
The bill, proposed by
Sen. Norman Sanderson,
R-Carteret, would withhold tax
dollars from cities and univer-
sities that dont comply with
federal immigration laws and
would prohibit UNC institu-
tions from becoming sanctuary
universities. A similar bill was
sent to the Houses Finance
Committee in March.

Carolina, said the bill would
infringe on the privacy rights
of community members and

about citizenship or immigra-

cities considering sanctuary
policies to think twice.

immigration enforcement.
He said communities could
become less safe without faith
in the police.
When you cant depend
on law enforcement, you have
unsafe things go unchecked or
people take justice into their
own hands, he said.
But Dave Ray, spokes-
person for the Federation
for American Immigration
Reform, said sanctuary policies
arent necessary to build trust
with immigrant communities.
Police departments use
discretion all the time, and
if someone is coming to the
police because they are a victim
of a crime, their immigration
status will not be questioned,
he said.
Ray said economic sanctions
can be effective motivators.
The bills sponsor obviously
understands that going after
the purse strings of commu-
nities is the way to get their
attention because its worked
elsewhere in the country on the
federal level, he said.
Hemminger said she hopes
local funding would not be
affected.
The funds theyre talking
about withholding would be
substantial to Chapel Hill, she
said. So Ive been encouraging
citizens to show up, stand up
and speak up to the Governor.
Meyer said the bill also
makes the political climate
more hostile for immigrants.
Even for some legal immi-
grants, they are feeling there is
a spillover effect where people
are being suspicious of any-
one who is an immigrant and
beginning to treat them badly,

could not have endeared them
to me. Hamsters were out of
the question; families who
had pet hamsters were not to
be trusted. Mice in our house
were never spoken of they
were disposed of, silently, by
my father, whose normal levels
of rodent-induced queasiness
were considered heroic.
I understand that raccoons
are not, technically, rodents.
However, their rodent-y hands
and collective sewer presence
demarcates them, for me, as a
part of the larger rodent group
that I roundly despise. I felt
oddly guilty about that rac-

to figure out what classes
to take next year. Through
general education require-
ments, students at UNC
are able and encouraged
to broaden their horizons
outside their chosen fields.
This board would like
to encourage students
to take classes not just
outside of their fields, but
outside of their comfort
zones. Specifically, we
want to encourage people
who identify as men to
take womens and gender
one possible answer is
that men simply dont
think they are welcome
in these classrooms. This,
of course, is not true. Just
like in many classrooms,
there are topics that will
ask students to question
their positions in society,
but these interrogations
should not turn students
away. In fact, students
should be encouraged to
critically think about their
place in and outside the
classroom.
Men in gender studies
courses represent a diver-
sity of understandings and

non-Latinx students to
take Latinx studies classes,
non-black students to take
AAAD classes, and non-
Native American students
to take American Indian
studies courses. We also
hope that students of all
genders will take gender
and sexuality studies
classes.
These classes are not
only great ways to rake up
gen-ed requirements, but
also for students to see the
other side of the coin and
critically engage with the
narratives and struggles of
others.
So, since Im never going
to be asked, I will write
my speech here. Someday
Stephen Colbert is going to
run out of speeches to give
at graduations, and Ill save
it for him. Im sure Ill be
his first call.

Im a normal almost
50-year-old person. Yes, that
means I didnt text the whole
time I was at UNC. How in
the world we managed to
actually FIND people during
the day still remains a mys-
tery. And if we had to change
a lunch date by five minutes,
it was utter chaos. I remem-
ber staring suspiciously at
imagined it was going to
be. But wherever you go,
and whatever you end up
doing at any given moment,
work hard. I dont care if its
serving fries or performing
brain surgery.
3. Apologize quickly if
you do something wrong,
make amends if needed
and then move on. Keep
your side of the street clean,
sweep up your messes and
admit your mistakes.
4. No one is ever as
happy as they look on
Facebook, or Instagram,
or any other form of social
media.
5. Call your parents,
often, if they are still
around. You will miss their
voices one day. They are a
link to your past, like it or

possum on my walk home. Let

have in recent memory, until I
felt the fear seeping out of my

night of the election, I emerged
from my friends room to find
a possum scavenging five feet

complete. Everything was going
horribly. Possums were stalk-
ing me to seek revenge for their
