Unit Plan Overview

2
The Dance unit will be completed over a three-week period. The unit will allow students to build off
of previous skills, challenge their immediate skills and aims to further strengthen their personal skills in the
movement activity. The students will be tasked to push themselves and develop their skills within the unit.
The unit should be approached to explain to the students that dance is an exciting activity where a variety
of different skills are needed and challenged. Students will be able to group themselves into minimum two
per group, maximum six. Motivation is entrenched in the fact that students are to build, create, or learn a
dance with their peers. Students will be given a variety of Just Dance video routines that they can if they
choose to, learn from and perform. Students are not required to pick one of these dances, they may seek
out other Just Dance videos to learn or they can also choose a school appropriate song to create their
own routine. Throughout the unit students are to take their time building their performance. After each
class students will self-assess on their participation and effort towards preparation of their routine. At the
end of the unit students are to perform a two-minute routine in front of their peers.

Unit Plan Rationale

Dance is a very creative and culturally expressive way to showcase interests and skills. This unit plan
has been designed to allow students the freedom to create a dance routine with their peers. The unit will
explore how the pedagogical framework of 21st century learning, technology integration, gender equality,
and student diversity considerations may aid in student development and ultimate success in continuing
interest in dance. Throughout the course of the unit students will take lead in their own learning by

identifying their own knowledge, skills, and attitudes as they relate to dance. This unit also inspires
students to participate and collaborate with their peers consistently. The dance unit will encourage
students to be self directed and ultimately lifelong dancers!
