LESSON TITLE: Family Ties. The Generation Gap

TIME: 50 minutes

FUNDAMENTAL INSTRUCTIONAL AIMS

-to provide oral practice and to encourage conversation based on an


assigned topic;

-to encourage the students to look for information and bring their own
arguments to support their answers;

-to stimulate conversation, to create interest in the topic and to initiate


discussion;

-to give the students a chance to practise their listening, speaking and
writing skills;

-to enrich vocabulary.


OPERATIONAL AIMS

- to get students talking about the generation gap;

- to give practice in reading techniques;

- to give practice in listening for attitude and opinion;

- to give practice in making suggestions and agreeing and disagreeing in


spoken English;

MATERIALS

-blackboard;

-notebooks;

- video- projector;

- textbook;

- CD.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS:

- Some students may not understand the text while listening and they may
need the tape script in order to do the task;
- Some students may be reluctant to speak and express their own points of
view.
PROCEDURE

2. Presentation The students are asked to watch a movie in 5


order to predict the topic of the new lesson

3. Productive stage The students work in pairs and discuss about 10


things parents and teenagers have arguments
about. They make a list and then classify the
issues.( exercise 1, page 68 )

4. Reading - The students are asked to read the article 10


quickly and find the points on their list
which are mentioned.
- The students are asked to read the article
more carefully and answer the questions 1-9.
( exercise 2, page 68 )
- The teacher checks the answers after the
students have checked them in pairs.
5. Listening - The students are asked to listen to two 10
extracts from a radio programme about
family life and choose the answer which fits
best to what they hear. ( exercise 1, page 69)
- The teacher checks their answers.
6. Follow - up - The students are asked to work in groups 5
and draw up a set of rules for making family
life run more smoothly. (exercise 2, page 69)
- The teacher plays a video about generation
gap in order to make students reflect more
on the attitude to their parents and
grandparents.

7. Homework and The teacher appreciates the students' 5


assessment performance and asks them to write as
homework the following:
Comment on: First we are children to our
parents, then parents to our children, then
parents to our parents, then children to our
children. Write a reflexive essay in about
200 words.
