SOLID MECHANICS (BDA 10402): ASSIGNMENT 1

SEM 2 SESSION 2011/2012

Chapter 1: Stress and Strain

S1. Determine the intensity w of the maximum distributed load that can be supported by
the hanger assembly so that an allowable shear stress of allow=100 MPa is not exceeded
in the 12 mm-diameter bolts at A and B, and an allowable tensile stress of allow= 150
MPa is not exceeded in the 15 mm-diameter rod AB.

Figure S1

S2. The rigid beam is supported by a pin at A and wires BD and CE.

(a) If the load P on the beam is displaced 10 mm downward, determine the normal
strain developed in wires CE and BD.
(b) If the maximum allowable normal strain in each wire is max= 0.002 mm/mm,
determine the maximum vertical displacement of the load P.

S3. The assembly consists of three titanium (Ti-6A1-4V) rods and a rigid bar AC. The corss-
sectional area of each rod is given in the figure.

(a) If a force of 30 kN is applied to the ring F, determine the horizontal displacement of

point F.

(b) If a force of 30 kN is applied to the ring F, determine the angle of tilt of bar AC

S4. Three bars each made of different materials are connected together and placed
between two walls when the temperature is T1=12C. Determine the force exerted on
the (rigid) supports when the temperature becomes T2=18C. the material properties
and cross-sectional area of each bar are given in the figure.

Chapter 2: Shear Force and Bending Moment

S1. A reinforced concrete pier is used to support the stringers for a bridge deck. Draw the
shear and moment diagrams for the pier when it is subjected to the stringer loads
shown. Assume the columns at A and B exert only vertical reactions on the pier.

S2. Draw the shear and moment diagram for the beam. The bearings at A and B only exert
vertical reaction on the beam.

S3. Draw the shear and moment diagram for the compound beam.
