CONCLUSIONS, FINDINGS & INFERENCES

From Mess food analysis

More than two/third of the students in IIST eat in the mess because it is
convenient and there is no money expenditure.
Very few feels that the food here is satisfactory.
The number of skips/ the number of visits of the students to the mess during
breakfast is dependent on the exam time or the regular time which is evident
from the Breakfast analysis.
More than 54% of the students skip the breakfast in the mess for more
than 3 days a week due to less time of serving and the taste scale they
measure and compare.
The food students get in the canteen of D2 and D4 is satisfactory with a
reasonable cost.
More than 52% of the students can satisfy themselves with an average
spending of Rs. 15- Rs. 20 per day.
Students prefer eating in the canteen than in the mess due to the short
time of serving during breakfast, and the convenience, good taste,
reasonable cost of the canteen food is an additional one.
Students can get snacks (puffs, biscuits, vada etc.,.) and tea/milk in the
canteen atleast two hours of the breakfast time of mess.
This makes the students to have something in the class breaks even if
they had breakfast.
The number of students who skip the breakfast during exams, more than
two times a week is drastically less when compared with students who
skip in regular days
More than one third students are not willing to skip the breakfast during
exams and the nearly same percentage is present in the case who skip all
the days.
The reason for the increase in the percentage of students who dont skip
the breakfast even one day during exams is early wakeup and hence being
early to the mess food.
The reason for the increase in who skip breakfast all days during exams is
the exam.

Lunch
The percentage of students who eat the lunch from the mess is without
skipping even single day is very less which can be understood from the
choice constraint and the time constraint.
Students could only eat either from the mess or from the cafeteria inside
the campus and the time gap between the fourth hour and the lab periods
is very less to go outside the campus and have food
The convenience students have is the reason for most the students to eat
lunch in mess itself.
Dinner
The number of students who skip the dinner atleast one day per week is
very high, more than 52%. From the preliminary survey the reason was
found to be one day the mess food during dinner is eaten by very few
students from the institute.
Moreover, during dinner it is possible to go the nearby places outside the
campus(Valiyamala) and have food for dinner.
From the quantitative analysis taken the students are willing to eat mess food
with the only reason being convenience(time) and free of cost and very few
percentage of students feel that the food is satisfactory.
The opinion of the students is the direct evidence of students to go out for food
to meet their taste.
From the Quantitative analysis, conclusions and inferences on Cafeteria food:
The first option to the students other than the mess is the cafeteria of
which the service of the juice mini shop is most liked by the students.
The general store present in the campus is less liked by the students as the
stock is not maintained properly
Regarding the canteen, as it is in the campus, students can eat even during
lunch and the students feel the price of the food to be reasonable.
Among the various foods present, students prefer the fried rice most.
Within an amount of 100/- the students feel that they are getting decent
food.
The percentage of the students who eat in the cafeteria will increase if
better hygiene is maintained and are willing to pay extra money for
hygiene.
The students are not willing to eat in the mess if the same cost is to be
paid in both mess and the cafeteria which concludes that the students can
find a better taste in the cafeteria rather than the mess.
From the quantitative analysis
Majority, more than 68% of the students are willing to eat near the
campus when mess is an out of option which is due to
1. No travel time
2. Relatively cheaper food
3. Able to meet the tastes
The second option of the students other than Valiyamala is
Thiruvananthapuram
The amount of money they spend though low in Valiyamala, where the
tastes are limited students wish to go out to have more delicious food.
As this is a journey constrained option people wish to go to the city in
during holidays or in the afternoons (no classes and labs). Obviously, the
percentage of students who go in the afternoons is very less.
The survey reveals that Nedumangad while sharing closer proximity to
IIST than Trivandrum attracts lower number of consumers .This could
possibly occur because of lower percieved quality of food in nedumangad
than trivandrum owing to brand value of the stores.
From the expenditure analysis of the students
The percentage of the students who spend money in and near the campus
is large when compared with the percentage of students who eat food in
Thiruvananthapuram, but the gross expenditure of the students in both the
places is nearly the same though the number of students who spend
nearby places and the city which is due to relatively higher price of the
food in the city.
If there are no delivery charges most of the students opt to get the food to
the campus which reduces the time and travel burden.
The expenditure of the students on home delivery is very less, more than
73% spend zero per week, which is the consequence of very low delivery
service and the students rather prefer going to the city to have food.
The number of students who needed the feeling of dining in restaurant in
very less which is concluded from the percentage of students who wanted
home delivery if there is no delivery charge.
The total spending at D2/D4 eateries is Rs1771.3
The total spending at nedumangad eateries is Rs 13539.05
The total spending at valiyama eateries is Rs 19403.85
The total spending at Trivandrum eateries is Rs 24191.9
The total spending on home delivery of food is Rs 7785.4
