Programme Highlights
The course will provide you with an opportunity to:
engage in critical reflection, and explore the purpose and use of research;
understand the process of designing and implementing qualitative research in
education;
learn about the significance of literature review and the development of a
conceptual framework;
identify a range of qualitative research methods used in educational research;
develop appropriate knowledge for data collection and analysis; and
discover strategies for communicating research through writing and
publication.
The course is divided in five modules, spread over two months:
Module I: Understanding the research process, literature review and
conceptual frameworks
Module II: Research design and qualitative methods
Module III: Data collection in qualitative studies
Module IV: Data analysis in qualitative studies
Module V: Communication, writing, and publication
Programme Facilitators
Dr Nelofer Halai is a Professor at AKU-IED and her research interests lie in three areas -
teaching and learning in science, higher education, and research methods. She completed her
doctoral studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto,
Canada and has published extensively in international and national journals. Prof Halai has
played a key leadership role in developing the doctoral programme in Education at AKU-
IED. She is also the founding and the current president of the Pakistan Association of
Research in Education (PARE).
Dr Dilshad Ashraf is an Associate Professor at AKU-IED and specialises in curriculum,
teaching learning, school improvement, educational governance and equity issues in
education. She has extensive experience of conducting and supervising qualitative research
projects. Dr Ashraf is a member of SAGE Open editorial board. Her more recent scholarly
achievement includes co-edited book Education Policies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and
Tajikistan: Contested Terrain in the Twenty-First Century.
Dr Nosheen Ali is an Assistant Professor at AKU-IED, and her specialisation is in Social
Studies and Pakistan Studies education. Dr Ali earned her PhD in Development Sociology
from Cornell University. Her research and publications span a wide terrain from
environmental policy to poetic tradition, as well as the role of information technology in
social change. Dr Ali has previously taught courses at UC Berkeley, New York University,
and Columbia University.
