Specific Goals:
I will increase my eighth grade social studies students understanding of reading informational text so that 86% of
my students will demonstrate mastery as measured by my classroom assessments by June of 2016.
Indicators of Progress:
*statistical aggregate assessment data, peer/coach observations, student responses from conferencing, student
written responses, parent feedback
Timeline:
Sept. 2015-June 2016
After reflecting upon the 2015-16 school year, there were some positive advances in my pedagogical
skills in addition to areas where skills are needing both improvement and refining.
The measured target goal this year for the assessment piece was 86%. Overall percentage for Team 8A
students was 84.43%. While not reaching the goal, it was a .95% increase from the prior years
percentage of 83.48%. By comparison, in 12-13 the percentage was 80.05% and 84.51% in 13-14. It is
important to note with 13-14, hours 2 and 3 had highest percentages of any sections since I began
tracking classroom assessment data. As a result of those 2 sections, that particular year also had the
highest range of percentage. This has led me to conclude the following: 1) that classrooms appear now
to be a bit more balanced, 2) instructional changes / adaptations are being made more frequently, and 3)
% range discrepancies across sections are smaller. Moving forward, I think the 86% as a target goal
should be kept until it is reached.
On a positive note, a variety of strategies were implemented to better assist with student comprehension
of Informational Text. These include, but are not limited to modified text coding, 3-2-1 (Learned,
Interesting, Question), and continued use of graphic organizers in both reading and study skills
activities. One area in need of improvement is to work in K-W-L strategies into classroom lessons on a
more consistent basis. I think it may be important to consider taking a handful of reading strategies,
teaching them, and applying them more frequently to better enhance student skill sets. My ultimate goal
would be to have 5 strategies that they know well as opposed to a high number that they are exposed to
only a few times over the course of the school year. In other words, place emphasis on the repetition of
certain strategies as opposed to trying many different ones where fewer reps are done.
COLD READS continue to be implemented in both classroom activities and within our assessments.
The number of exposures to COLD READS students receive met or were, in fact, greater than the every
other week expectation. This data was shared with students and parents during our Parent / Teacher
conferences and by meeting with students individually. Record keeping, data, and sharing information
continue to need more work and will continue as priority if I expect our students to improve..
In terms of collaboration, I was able to work with 8A and 8B English Departments on development of
vocabulary, academic vocabulary, Newsela articles, and future interdisciplinary activities.
Newsela Leveled Readings were introduced in 2nd Semester and will be a primary focus next year as
I continue to collaborate with the English Department.
