use multiple similes in their poetry writing correctly. This will prepare them for their

writing standards and state tests in third grade. This lesson is one of many lessons within

out poetry unit. The first half of the unit is to get them thinking about how to write a

poem and become familiar with components that essential to a poem, such as a simile. I

am teaching the lesson in this way so my students can learn and then apply their

understanding in their own writing. Students must understand this concept in order to

complete their summative assessment, which is a final draft of a poem about popcorn.

Evaluation Plan- How will Formative evidence: I will assess my students throughout my lesson through

using the words like and as. At the end of the lesson, they will self-edit their simile

worksheet.

Summative evidence: Students will be assessed at the end of the week through a final

draft of their poem. The poem must contain at least 5 similes.

draft on the next day.

What will you do if a student struggles with the content?

I will prepare a table for a small group. These students will sit with me and I

will be able to advise them during their writing process. We will also have our

middle school mentors in the classroom circulating and helping them when

them to become more creative and think outside of the box.
