Comprehension questions for before-during-after watching the videos.

Activating Strategy (for example: Hook/Mini-Lesson/Warm-Up/Connection to Prior Learning)


Teacher presents pictures of her family and her trip to L.A. and asks students if they have been there.
Then, all the students should visualize: What images come to mind when you hear someone
mentioning the city of Los Angeles?

Instructional Sequence and Activities including use of technology


Teacher reviews procedures at the Media Center.
Students go to Media Center.
Teacher starts with the Activating Strategy.
Students receive the handout with instructions and graphic organizer.
Explain what a K-W-L chart is (in Spanish Lo s- Quiero saber-Aprend) on Los Angeles .
Fill out the K section to list what you know about the city of LA. Answer the question: Have
you ever been to Los Angeles, CA. If yes, write what you remember/ your impressions about
the city. If not, write what you know about the city or its citizens. What images came to mind
when you were visualizing?
Share your answers with the class. (1min).
With a partner, students come up with at least two questions about LA and write them on the
W section. Students turn their papers to complete the tasks related to the videos.

Students follow Mr. G.s directions, watch the videos, and answer the questions :

Watch the Video : Mexican-American Heritage Chapter 4 (2:54) Field Trip to a Mexican
Market.
(Relate: make connections to personal experiences) Answer the question: Have you ever
been to a Mexican market or a Mexican food store? If yes, write what was different from
your regular food-store. If not, compare your regular store to Manuels.
Watch the video: The West: Geography of Hope Chapter 7 (4:32) The Barrio: Mexican
Americans Become a Minority in Los Angeles. Answer the questions:
(Reason: Draw a conclusion) Why is the year 1887 important for Los Angeles County?

Has the Hispanic population made an impact in the United States? If so, how? Think of The
Alamo in TX, and the Barrio in L.A., La pequea Habana in Miami.

(Symbolize- Hypothesize) Why do you think Los Angeles is the setting for our new
chapter? Would todays work reflect what we will see in this chapter? What is the
connection to Spanish class?

Students complete the Learned column of their K-W-L chart and share with the class.

We are going to start a new chapter Te presento a mi familia. The story takes place in Los Angeles,
California. Therefore, to have a better understanding of the cultural aspects, we are going to do a
background-building task.
I. Follow the procedures of the Media Center.
II. Go to the Media Center website at www.elkinspointemediacenter.weebly.com.
III. Log-in to Safari Montage. (See the instructions provided by Mr. Gilliland).
IV. Click on E and select Elkins Pointe Middle School.
V. Click on search and type the name of the video.
VI. Select the chapter indicated.
