EXAM 1
1. Given
Internal Diameter = 90 mm
Outer Diameter = 110 mm
Ys = 550 MPa
KIc = 30Mpa/
Flaw length, 2c = 4.5 mm
Flaw depth, 2a = 1.5 mm

The shape factor as a factor of aspect ratio is given by

The stress intensity factor for an elliptical flaw is given by

Therefore, thin walled cylinder equations no longer hold since stresses vary
significantly between inner and outer surfaces. Therefore the pressure is
determined using the values from thick cylinder equations.

3.

In this question we have option 1, which is a single layer of 20mm sheet and
option 2, which is a 20 layers of 1mm sheets.
The material is subjected to only tensile load of 200KN. So, the material
follows Mode-1 fracture.
a = 40mm
= 0.3
= 210
Stress Intensity Factor Calculation
Since both option 1 and option 2 have same area where it is subjected to
tensile load. The stress and the stress intensity factor of both option 1 and
option2 are the same and are given as follows.

But on the other hand the option 1 is a simple plane strain problem because
of the finite thickness of the plate. So,

For option 2, the plates follow plane stress condition because the thickness is
negligible when compared to the other dimensions of the plate.

The stiffness of the Option 1 is greater than Option 2. So, the crack in
option 2 propagates faster than option 1. So, Option 1 is the better model of
the two.

(c) The stiffness of the two configurations are not the same. It is because
option 1 follows plane strain and option 2 follows plane stress condition.

5. (a)
I feel that the exam is perfect with practical application problems and fair.
I also feel that the lecture notes and review materials covers all the topics
in this exam, which makes this exam a fair one. I learnt a lot from this
course especially from assignments and this exam.
(b)
This exam took me about three sessions of about one and a half to two
hours each.
(d)
The class teaching and lecture notes are really amazing. I love the fact
that we discuss real time examples and it is really a fun experience taking
this class.
(e)
I consent that the material presented in this exam is based on my
own thinking and I have never consulted with my colleagues or any
third person to address any of the exam questions.
