UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

• 48th Annual Braille Rallye on Saturday, July 17th: Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, in partnership with
the MG Car Club of Greater Washington, will host the 48th Annual Braille Rallye for children and adults
who are visually impaired or blind. Children and adults will serve as navigators and will read large print
or braille directions to the drivers of classic cars. This event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
Burke Lake Park in Burke, VA. To register, please contact Andrea Noel at (240) 737-5171 or

• Women’s Support Group on Wednesday, July 21st: This group is for women infected and affected by
HIV. Come on down for refreshments, incentives, field trips, group discussion, and information. The
meeting will be from 2 – 3:30 pm at Prevention Works! (2501 Benning Road NE). For more information,

• Yoga & Meditation Mindfulness Classes every Wednesday, starting July 21st: Stretch, strengthen, and
let go of stress with this weekly class that combines yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises. Led by
YogaActivist.org volunteer teachers, these free classes are open to anyone who wants to respectfully
join in. No special clothing is required but you will be asked to take your shoes off during class. The
classes will be held on Wednesdays from 5:30 – 6:30pm at Prevention Works! (2501 Benning Road NE).

• Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month Community Forum on
Thursday, July 22nd: From 6:30pm – 8:30pm in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building (1350
Pennsylvania Avenue NW, D Street entrance), the Council will be hosting a community forum. The focus
will be “Minority Mental Health: Promoting Awareness, Eliminating Stigma, and Supporting Families.”
The panelists for the forum will include Dr. Annelle Primm of the American Psychiatric Association,
Majosé Carrasco of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Dr. Barbara Bazron of the District’s
Department of Mental Health, and Rodney Mitchell of Reentry Legal Services. See the flier below for

• “Food Inc.” Screening on Thursday, July 22nd: Food and Water Watch will be screening “Food Inc.” at
6:30 pm (doors open at 6pm) at the Letelier Theater in Georgetown (3251 Prospect Street NW) with a
discussion to follow. For more information, please see the flier below.

• Washington Youth Garden Friends & Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 24th: Enjoy some fresh, healthy
snacks, meet the new honeybees, ring in the new Nature Explore Classroom, and listen to live music and
tour the garden. The event will be at the US National Arboretum (3501 New York Avenue NE). Please

• Community Health Fair on Saturday July 24th: Prevention Works! will be holding this fair from 10am –
4pm at 2501 Benning Road, NE. Come to meet community service providers, tour the Mobile Health
Unit, tour the Neighborhood Harm Reduction Center, make safer-sex kits, and get an HIV test.
