Society Expectation of Woman
In ancient time,the society was so strict with woman.The man in
ancient time could do whatever they wanted even own woman as
property. According to the Oxford advanced dictionary,the definition
of the word expectation is to think or to believe something would
happen or someone to do something.In ancient time, men expected
woman to sacrifice themshelves to serve man . Many feminism
novels and romance novels represents that idea. Such as the two
stories From A Secret Sorrow and A Sorrowful Woman, they
shows that marriage had brought a lot of negative effect to womans
psychological , physical and emotional state.Because of the society
expectation ,woman did not have the same freedom as man. Society
gave too much expectation , which damaged the psychological
health and have taken away the chance to seek their happiness.

First of all,the society expectations shows onto these young

woman in the story does not have the same freedom as man. For
example ,in the eleventh chapter of the story From a Secret
Sorrow. Faye said you have a choice , dont you see that? You do
not have to marry me and you marry with somebody else. ,which
shows in ancient time ,the woman did not have the same freedom
as man.Woman could not choose her husband but man could choose
his wife.The society expected woman to be a machine ,for man,to
make children , which did not give enough freedom or respect to
woman. In another story The story of an hour.The reason of why
Lourise ,the main character feels happy after she heard the
message that her husband had been died is that she think her
husband did not give enough freedom to her. That shows the society
just to expect woman to do everything but not considered enough
about the freedom and droit of woman.

Second , society had given too much expectation to woman

,which damaged the psychological health of woman. According to
the second story A Sorrowful woman. A woman with mental
disease and could not solve her problem , finally she could not
endure anymore ,she died. Society expected the woman to be a
machine to do everything such as to have children or do all of the
housework. After the pregnant is the most fragile time of a
woman,but society expected her to do too much thing and did not
give enough help to her to solving the mental disease. Her husband
did not give enough support to her,which strenghen her mental
disease. At last she died. The reason of why she had cleaned up the
house ,written the poem,cooked the delicious dinner is the society
expectation made her think that the duty of her is to do everything.
In general,this tragedy was caused by the unreasonable society
expectation and the lack of responsibility.

Third ,society expectation had taken away the chance of those

woman to seek their happiness. The society expectation about the
place of woman in a married life is just to subordinate to man ,which
means woman to be docile and easy to control by men. In the story
From a Secret Sorrow , a person who could not get pregnant is not
the fault of her, but Faye,the main character in the story could not
seek her happiness because of the society expects every woman
was a machine to reproduce. A woman who did not have the ability
to have children is just like a machine can not work and useless.
Therefore, Faye does not have any other choice to seek her
happiness. In the story the Story of an Hour,Lourise had been
completely trapped by her husband because the society expectation
expected her to subordinate to her husband.

In conclusion , society expected woman to sacrifice for man and

marriage, which means mo freedom and subordinate to man even
trapped by man. The pressure from society expectation had
damaged the psychological health of woman. The stories shows the
opinion of the author that marriage4 had brought a lot of negative
effects to womans psychological, physical and emotional state. In
my opinion ,the reasonable society expectation is not just to do
housework or stay at home ,they could do almost things that man
could do ,such as employ a job and have well education.
